Underrated/Unappreciated Movies

Sadly I think it's more that Halloween III was so unpopular that they gave up on the idea of doing a horror anthology franchise with a different story each time out. lol. Yeah I think basically after the second film they got the idea to do a one-off storyline in each subsequent film but because Halloween III was poorly received, they went back to the popular Myers.

I think it was kind of a dumb idea to try the anthology thing under the Halloween banner. I'm trying to think of that ever being well received in an existing franchise with characters established over two movies. Or even only one established movie.

They should have just released it under a Creepshow type of label and not used the goodwill of the Halloween name. It was basically asking for trouble and an audience that felt bait and switched.

Excellent point. At the very least I can commend the powers that be for thinking, okay we went to the well twice with Myers- he's dead- there's nothing more we can do with the character, let's try something different. But once they went back to Myers, it went full-on who cares, it's supernatural type ish, just keep it going.

That was the thing with the three iconic horror franchises of the 80s. The characters transcended the movies. Iconic pop culture characters. It always struck me that Freddy was the easiest to justify bringing back. Jason it just got increasingly nutty until the very fun Jason Lives was just like okay it's just supernatural stuff now.

But you're absolutely right- can't use the Halloween name, flip the script by abandoning the established plot and expect people not to be irked. Still, damn fun movie in my view. But you're right- would have been better as a Creepshow type thing.

So legit. It's like a period piece/detective story/action film with Matrix/Crouching Tiger type influence. What's not to like. Ultra badass movie with a cool plot.

Lumet made so many good ones. Legendary filmmaker. But this is easily one of my favorites. I think Serpico is largely touted as the better film and is certainly the better-known film, but I like the similarly themed Prince of the City substantially more. Really well-written, well-crafted, and with great performances. It is long but very compelling.
Prince of the City is one of those movies I want
to See that I haven't yet the same thing with Fort
Apache: The Bronx.

They’re both really solid. I prefer Prince of the City because it’s more narratively tight.
But Fort Apache: The Bronx is really entertaining. It’s more like a slice of life of these likable beat cops working a tough neighborhood. Light on plot but heavy on grittiness and with strong performances by Newman and Asner.

There’s surprisingly a good amount of humor too with many of the jokes coming from the interplay between Newman and his young Italian-American partner.
