Umar Nurmagomedov is the only answer to Merab

what's harder to overcome, a staph infection or a broken hand during a fight in the first round?

I'm not actually sure that Merab won that fight, 5th round was Merab more by theatrics than actual points.

Umar is going to be prepared better, he is a more talented fighter. Not sure if he can muster the cardio discrepancy, but he can definitely beat Merab.
Agreed. It's literally the cardio, other than that, Umar has the all the skills and is as fluent with them as anyone on the roster imo. Other than Big Mac I don't think there is a more well rounded and fluent MMA fighter on the roster.

People need to stop pretending that Umar/Merab was a dominant win for Merab, it was a razor close fight which was decided in the last round.

If Umar actually broke his hand in the first round it makes his performance even more impressive.

I just don't see Cory or Yan giving Merab any trouble.

Its unfortunate how inactive Umar is because the rematch with Merab is one of my most anticipated fights.

Congratulations to Merab who is undoubtedly the bantamweight goat but no one can convince me that he's not on the special sauce.
Lol merab had injured lower back and infected leg in that fight and he still beat umar + he could finish him but he didnt bcs he wanted to make fun of umar in rematch merab will finish umar and u will shut up lile seans fans did

I agree. Umar lost because he got melted at the end, but it's clear he's put up the best fight next to Aldo. Sandhagen adds a new name to Merab's resume, but Umar rematch is pretty much his only tough test besides moving up. Even Pantoja would get melted.

did anything ever come of umar's claimed hand injury? i could see a rematch happening if that indeed happened early on in the fight

Nah just an excuse. The Dagis make them even in victory. It’s embarrassing. He got beat by the superior fighter and they just can’t accept it because he has the Nurmagomedov name.

Ah yes of course. Merab has a dominant win and actually finished a guy, and TS makes a thread glazing Umar about it.

Umar needs to earn another shot just like O'Malley should have.

Pretty easy win for Umar in a rematch. He's more skilled everywhere, so without a broken hand and short training camp, he should be able to sweep the first 3 rounds at least. Hell, even gassed with a broken hand, Merab still wasn't able to do much to him. It basically came down to that last burst of energy from Merab in the last minute of the fight to steal the 5th, but Umar still landed more in that round and Merab only got 2 TDs for a total of 50 seconds of control time out of 12 TD attempts.

Who the hell thinks Umar/Merab was a one sided fight? That was a 3-2 super close fight that Merab won and yes Umar is the one guy who can maybe get past him.

Merab is eventually gonna slow down since he's mid 30s and if Umar can get his cardio up he can probably be the one to pass Merab.

Question is will it happen next year. Sandhagen is next and figure Umar needs one win in the fall to secure a rematch, will that fight be vs Yan or Song, we'll see.

Umar is gonna wear gold its just will it be next year or two years from now.

Umar won’t want that fight until merab shows some decline. These Dagestani villagers duck.
So he didn't fight merab in his last fight and lose? I must be getting old even 'duck' doesn't mean what it use to.

Prime Aldo was the answer but ship has passed, it's insane what Aldo did in his fight at that point in his career.

Was trying to remember if Merab was just content to hold Aldo against the fence so he didn't even shoot that much but just saw the stats and he was 0 for 16.

That's fucking impressive for Aldo so late in his career.

Merab does not have great TD%, but 0 had never happened before or since.

Umar blew his load in the first 2 rounds and Merab ran over him. He was already showing massively improved striking.
They fight again and he will make Umar look even worse if he doesn;t get time to build back.

Umar needs to go get 2-3 wins in some main events with a few going the distance. They rush him again and he will get smoked this time.

That is definitely the case, Merab won but more on condition and not on technique or being a better fighter. Umar is still young and can make steps

I would like to see a rematch at some point

Keep sleeping on the Sandman y'all. Telling you now he's gonna give Merab a DOGFIGHT. Won't wilt and break like Suga. Better grappler by far, still has diversified striking. Elite cardio. Merab looks past him like plenty here seem to be and we will hear "Aaaaaand new!"

Merab vs Umar had the same scorecards as Pereira vs Ank and certain peeps on Sherdog called that a domination.

Not a single media scorecard was in Umar’s favour either.

Father Time. Merab like many will encounter age decline. Injuries will occur ever more slightly and heal slower then slippery slope since need to ease up on training and potentially lose his endurance advantage. Merab can probably hold on longer than most but fighting wears.

It was a very close fight, if he can improve his cardio, manage it better and have a different approach he will have a better shot.

But Merab is looking better and better.
That’s a huge “but,” too.
Does the Russian have a fight scheduled yet; or is he still recovering from their last fight?

Umar needs 2-3 years in Dagestan to train for Merab 2.0 at this point 😂
