Merab could go back and beat someone, and frankly champions shouldn't be automatically due instant rematches, but when the UFC already does do that and they're 1-1, a rubber match seems like it would be the next move. There's no point to an immediate rematch with the beating that Merab took. Yan had him hurt badly at least a half dozen times. Never seen Merab on his back foot for almost an entire fight.

A little misleading to say "they made me go through 3 more fights to get into contender position again" while conveniently leaving out that he lost his fight that would have gotten him there in 1, then lost again after, and needed 3 wins because he had 3 straight losses. Even though the O'Malley loss was a pretty sketchy decision, it wasn't so outrageous that Dana would or should have just ignored the decision and given him another title fight anyway against the same guy for the 3rd time in 18 months.

Umar is fighting at UFC 324, so I won't be surprised if Umar fights Yan next, assuming he does win as expected.

Merab might indeed need a #1 contender fight to get another shot at the title. Or he might choose to take some time off. He had a crazy schedule this year.

1-1 doesnt mean auto-rematch. Sometimes 1-1 is the end of someone' career. Context of how the second fight goes, matters.

I think the argument against that is that Umar would have to be inactive for too long.

Merab probably needs a decent amount of rest now (5-6 months+), given the damage he took and how active he has been this year.

I would give Umar the next shot (if he wins), then Merab can face the winner.

Also, I wouldn't want two of the top 3 fighters in the division fight against each other for anything other than the actual title.

I'm also more hyped to see Yan vs Umar, I think it would be a great fight.
