Buday also finished Parisian. Ankalaev finished similar competition. For rest he just grinded his opponent on cage, same as Buday. Btw if he chosed same gameplan as Buday vs Fleury. He would get destroyed in same way.

Yes 100% think that Ankalaev would get folded by Fleury if he chosed same stupid gameplan as Buday and wanted to push forward and not wrestle or clinch. I aswell think that Buday would destroy Ankalaev in grappling.

In my opinion Ankalaev is overall better fighter than Buday or Fleury...but he is simply not "special" anywhere. I personally think that he wouldn't ever touch title if there was not Ali behind him. Favourable matchmaking and tailored gameplans with his capability/skill of executing them is main reason of his success + thin LHW division.

UFC never wanted Big Ank to be the champ regardless of whatever Ali did which wasnt much. He won many fights in a row but they would usually just try to give him a fighter they could afford to lose, who wont ever be champ like Walker, or Ion. You couldnt call those fights boring, he knocked them both out. They just didnt like his personality or the fact that sometimes his fights were dull. They especially hated him after the Jan fight went the way it did, even though people conveniently forget that he got injured early in the fight. They put Ank in Jon Fitch's spot, hoping that he would lose eventually, so they could avoid having him derail a top contender, or never get a shot, but that never happened. Eventually they had to give him one. He got to where he is because of his skill, and when they finally gave him a top ranked opponent like Rakic, he was able to beat him, when he got a title shot he was able to win it. So no, there was no favourable matchups, He got there because of his skills. Even people who hate Ank know that the guy is obviously very skilled, he is without doubt one of the best LHW's in the UFC. Like him or not.

Fleury or Buday is none of these things.

I agree to disagree with you. His title shot was gifted after beating people like Anthony Smith or Walker. He had favourable matchups all the time and UFC definitely did not hold him away from being champ because of market behind him. + Ali advocating for him. All that changed when he showed absolute pathetic performance in already mentioned title fightt vs Jan...Jan which is atm looking at 2 loses and draw with Guskov. That was strike 1, strike 2 was complaining and stating that result was robbery + add "ramadan",etc... Its basically same with Arman now.

BTW Ankalaev got basically identical UFC record as Hill and had same "lucky" way to title and will also end up on losing streak if he fights Jiri next. Thats my opinion, guess time will show us who was right.

- That was Ali trashing Jiri, not Ankalaev. Regardless, talk was all that was ever going to be because Ankalaev was always going to rematch Pereira after the first fight. They were just drumming up some attention when it briefly looked like Pereira wasn't too interested in the rematch ("I got hacked" etc.)
