" UFC 160: Why Hunt vs. Dos Santos Was the Best Match in UFC Heavyweight History "

It wasn't the best match in UFC HW history, but it's a match that lived up to its billing and a match a lot of fans wanted.

Naw not even close, people are already re-writing the fight to say that it was competitive when in actuality it was 12+ minutes of JDS just lighting Hunt up.

Round 1- Hunt lands only 5 strikes...JDS lands 20
Round 2- Hunt lands 20 strikes, his best round by far. JDS lands 35
Round 3- Hunt lands only 9...JDS lands 25.
Total Hunt 34 and JDS 80

I was rooting for hunt because of the story, but this was not even close to a competitive fight, there was a flash of Hunt in the second round and then he was taken down and smothered. But no way this was the best HW fight ever.

Compubox or whatever is not a good way of judging a fight I know I will be called a Hunt nuthugger but I agree with Jack the the fight was really close and a matter of adjusting the stragety. I think JDS would most likely win again but I give Hunt a 30% chance of beating him

Couture vs. Nogueira, Sylvia vs. Nogueira, Couture vs. Rizzo I and Rizzo vs. Barnett are all up there too

Best HW MMA fight is still Nogueira vs. Cro Cop, which is also the best fight in Pride history imo

Sylvia vs Nogueira? I dont know man. It was somewhat of a snoozefest with Sylvia exploiting his reach and Nog displaying pretty horrendous striking defense to go with it. Granted, the come from behind sub was awesome though.

Hunt vs JDS had added drama because of the Hunt fanbase and his late career resurrection in general. The overhand in the first caught him heavily though, and he wasnt really a threat after that, the cardio quickly becoming another issue. Probably not the best, but excellent fight nonetheless.

First fight in my sig happened with agreed smiles.

The other is slowly starting to form its hype methodically thanks to Mother Russia & Twitter.

That fight felt like it could end on either side at any moment the entire time. I call that competitive.

Any HW with one-punch KO power can end a fight at any minute. Just because someone is still dangerous so long as they are conscious doesn't mean the fight was competitive. Give Hunt credit for constantly trying but JDS was avoiding his big shots pretty easily. Two dangerous guys gave it their all which was cool. But if we judge a fight based on who landed more strikes and who did more damage, this wasn't even close.

I know this thread will be quickly overrun by fightfinder experts and armchair analysts who look at a fight's result and nothing more. But for those who enjoy a good technical breakdown (I know there are at least a few of you one here) give this a read to see how Hunt found success early, JDS took control with quickness and skill, Hunt found openings to stay in the fight, and how JDS finally put Hunto away with a brilliant strategic coup-de-grace.

Enjoy.

I do not like to pretend that all main events are main-event worthy or that all dominating performances show improvement in the winner—you only need to look at how little I wrote about Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva to see that I don't have time to hype gift fights or waffle about matches which don't interest me.

I bet he didn't analyze Barboza/Varner for the same reason.

Great breakdown. Hunt did better than most people think, and Junior is simply a savage !

Junior's a smart boxer as well as physically gifted. One thing I noticed is he'd dip his head to the inside when throwing his cross to stay just out of the range of Hunt's go-to cross-counter, which would leave him in a good position to throw a counter of his own.

Excellent article. I never get sick of Jack's breakdowns, always a good read. I really like how he breaks down fights in a chess like manner.

Keep them coming!

good read, very tehnical, strongly agree on Hunts performance

Read it before. Great breakdown! Hunt-JDS was a great technical battle and was pretty competitive at times. I

If this is the Best Match of UFC Heavyweight history then the fights in this division must really suck.

At any rate, I disagree that this is the best from the UFC Heavyweights thus far.

Just curious, what UFC HW fight would you rate higher?

I'd have to agree with the notion that in terms of technique, action, and brutality, I haven't seen a UFC HW bout that tops it.

I was heavily pro-Hunt going into this one, but after the great fight I got to witness, at the end I was all like:

I must admit I hadn't seen Hunt fight before. And now that I finally have I surprised he's risen as far as he has. I couldn't believe the total lack of footwork by Hunt. Granted, I wasn't expecting somebody with Hunts frame to be bouncing like Guida but he was flatfooted and plodding the entire time.
Is it that in Hunt's prior fights did his opponents decide to play the stand and trade game with him? Obviously a mistake. Hunt's hands look quick. Quick and heavy that is.
