You are so fucking awesome for bringing that one up, I'm ashamed I forgot it on my own list. That's one of the most underrated fights in MMA history, a bad ass back-and-forth war with both guys reaching down to the absolute depths of their hearts to find the will to keep pushing forward and trying to put the other guy away. Tank was loving it during the commentary, just going nuts at witnessing two heavyweights going after it like that.
Kudos on that nomination.
No one in K-1 besides Schilt could do what JDS did to Hunt last night.
What exactly did you find so remarkable? That he got the better of him standing, as many people have in the past, or just that he finished him with a flashy spinning kick? JDS didn't really do all that much, certainly not much that hasn't been done to Hunt before by people in K-1 like JLB or even in MMA by fucking Nishijima. Hunt has lax defense (never been a problem since his chin is insane and his style, like Chuck's, often solicits punishment by his opponent so as to allow him to return fire), sometimes he plods forward slow and tentatively (he had countless opportunities to pin JDS up against the cage and at least get a good two-punch combination in if not a flurry but instead he was content to just follow him around the perimeter), and sometimes he gets frustrated by an opponent's speed (Mirko's speed in their K-1 fight had Hunt completely stumped and Mirko was able to nullify Hunt's offense almost completely).
There was nothing revelatory in JDS' performance. He has big power and fast hands and a good chin, so he was able to land on Hunt a lot, cause damage when he landed, and withstand the few clean punches the slower and tentative Hunt was able to land on the rare occasions he committed to offense.
People downplaying it don't realize how big of an accomplishment that was imo.
The ignorance card might work on someone else, but not me, I assure you. I've spent enough time watching this stuff to be able to claim an informed opinion
