" UFC 160: Why Hunt vs. Dos Santos Was the Best Match in UFC Heavyweight History "

Kongo vs Barry was more intense but this was a good fight. not best imo

Anyone remember TK/Kimo?

You are so fucking awesome for bringing that one up, I'm ashamed I forgot it on my own list. That's one of the most underrated fights in MMA history, a bad ass back-and-forth war with both guys reaching down to the absolute depths of their hearts to find the will to keep pushing forward and trying to put the other guy away. Tank was loving it during the commentary, just going nuts at witnessing two heavyweights going after it like that.

Kudos on that nomination.

No one in K-1 besides Schilt could do what JDS did to Hunt last night.

What exactly did you find so remarkable? That he got the better of him standing, as many people have in the past, or just that he finished him with a flashy spinning kick? JDS didn't really do all that much, certainly not much that hasn't been done to Hunt before by people in K-1 like JLB or even in MMA by fucking Nishijima. Hunt has lax defense (never been a problem since his chin is insane and his style, like Chuck's, often solicits punishment by his opponent so as to allow him to return fire), sometimes he plods forward slow and tentatively (he had countless opportunities to pin JDS up against the cage and at least get a good two-punch combination in if not a flurry but instead he was content to just follow him around the perimeter), and sometimes he gets frustrated by an opponent's speed (Mirko's speed in their K-1 fight had Hunt completely stumped and Mirko was able to nullify Hunt's offense almost completely).

There was nothing revelatory in JDS' performance. He has big power and fast hands and a good chin, so he was able to land on Hunt a lot, cause damage when he landed, and withstand the few clean punches the slower and tentative Hunt was able to land on the rare occasions he committed to offense.

People downplaying it don't realize how big of an accomplishment that was imo.

The ignorance card might work on someone else, but not me, I assure you. I've spent enough time watching this stuff to be able to claim an informed opinion

Best ever? Nahh.

but Sherdog was finally collectively right about something- JDS vs Hunt on paper was 10x the fight JDS vs Mir was on paper, and that fight should not have happened.

Best HW fight this month. Ever, no way. Technical, yes but mostly because of JDS willing to stand and take Hunt on at his own game.

Anytime someone says "The best _____ In UFC History," I get a little annoyed. It was an amazing fight, let's at least see how we feel about it in a few weeks before we jump the gun.

I used to feel the same way, but that when they were using it EVERY CARD circa Brock's reign era. I'm glad to see less and less of it, and I guess that I've gotten over it because I didn't even think of that this time around.

if only hunt didn't break his toe 1 minute into round one
he probably would have lost still, but it would have been even more competitive
it was a great fight and an important hw fight for sure, i agree there

It was exciting but in no way was it competitive. From what I remember Hunt only had one moment where he had JDS against the cage and landed a few shots but JDS was in no way ever in trouble. The best UFC heavyweight fight has to be competitive to be the best in my opinion.

Why does that matter?

Uh so he can prove he has better standup than a k1 champ maybe?

because if you want to be a champion you eventually have to throw your best up against someone elses and hope its better.

That fight felt like it could end on either side at any moment the entire time. I call that competitive.

Been a fan of Hunt since his pride Career and this fight wasnt even close JDS clearly outclassed him, this fight reminded me of JDS vs Roy in which they were both just punching bags

I would take one of Cain's fights over that anyday. I actually think Cain vs. JDS was one of the best....JDS was absorbing so much punishment yet he didn't give up and it went to a decision!
