News UFC’s New Strategy to go after Online Pirate Streams

Without the internet, it would be very dark times. I'm so grateful for it every single minute.

they're butting up against the law of diminishing returns. retail expects 3% theft. to lower that amount wouldn't be cost-effective.
they have to settle for what they get. fighting it just costs money and those few extra people who will conceivably now pay for the ppv when piracy is defeated just ain't worth the aggravation.

You know what causes people to buy PPVs? Buzz.

You know what causes buzz? Lots of people interested.

You know how to maximize the number of people interested? Piracy.

The UFC is the opposite of a rival good. Increased piracy increases paying customers.
True, but they have to make piracy difficult enough to still sell PPV.

I'd add that advertisers don't care if their ads are seen legally or not. 10millions illegal streamers is more interesting for them than 1million PPV buyers.

Every buy that’s stolen is hurting [McGregor] and other fighters. This is not a victimless crime or one that just hurts the big corporation—it hurts the individual athletes . . . remember they have as short window [of life] to monetize” their athletic abilities and skills.
Complete bullshit

The money goes to dana white's las vegas snow driveway.

didnt read, but im not paying for something I need to watch at night/early morning. I wakeup and torrent it,skip wmma and all the rest of the crap and move on with my day. you will never get my $ you bald mfer

Torrenting it is like the easiest way for you to get caught lol.
I didnt know people still did this.

I mean you do get a couple warnings if u get caught and the greatest punishment is just your isp banning you which isnt really a big deal.

But still, why torrent it when you can just watch the fights you want to see on any of the many websites?

ppl who pay for shit that's free on the internet are weird
Yup. You can go to any number of porn sites with access to 10’s of millions of free videos. Yet, you have dummies paying $20 to look at pictures of an average looking female who doesn’t even get naked. I can’t figure out for the life of me what would possess someone to waste money in this way. It’s truly mind boggling.

I think this has to be driven by ego a little bit. Dana is so used to getting his way, that he can’t stand that pirates are getting the better of him. Problem is that it can’t be stopped. Bigger and more powerful organizations than the UFC have tried and failed.

i've been using torrents all my life for everything, it is what it is. its better quality and faster to skip everything once I've them instead of watching them on some random website with million of popups/ads and a struggle to fast forward things you want when you chose.
its just smokes and mirrors at this point. never do i worry for somebody to go to the lengths of actually ''catching me'' especially for something as low-tier product as ufc...

I think it's a familiarity attraction/fascination. Like watching aa tv show and wondering what the goods look like. I would assume it stirs enough interest and interest = money.

Would never waste my money on such but I can kinda see the inclination...

They’re completely tone deaf and out of touch. People who watch streams are fans, normal people, who simply can’t afford $60 for a few hours of entertainment but still want to see what happens. Trying to stop streams will not make more people pay for PPV, it will actually drive fans away.

If someone could wipe their ass with 60 bucks they wouldn’t watch it on a grainy, laggy stream in the first place, they’d already be paying to see it in high quality. The obvious solution is to lower the price or put PPVs on Fight Pass. That would make them more money over time, they would take a hit on the mega PPVs but more people would subscribe year round which means more money overall.

Drop the ppv model and offer an affordable yearly subscription to all content. It currently costs almost $1000 a year to access all UFC content. That’s outrageous, no wonder people pirate. The best way to fight piracy is offer an affordable, reliable and legal alternative.
What the fuck are you talking about?!

Why would they put ANYTHING behind paywall?!

You know how much they cash from TV deals and sponsorship? Nearly a billion annually.

ALL FUCKING fights should be FREE, period.
