Can't get excited about anything new right now, so going back to old shit. I spent a while on Hulu going back through
The X-Files, then I had a sitcom rewatch double-header of
The Larry Sanders Show, which paved the way for - and which still outclasses - everything from
Curb Your Enthusiasm and
Arrested Development to
The Office and
Parks and Recreation, and
The Nanny, which always cracks me up and with the amazing Fran Drescher who's still the only female lead to really do justice to the legacy of Lucille Ball.
Right now,
The Mentalist is one of my all-time favorites but I'd never seen Simon Baker's previous show
The Guardian. It's on Paramount+ and I'm already into Season 2. Solid legal drama. I knew it'd be a warm-up for a rewatch of
The Mentalist, but I'm pleasantly surprised how good
The Guardian is (even though Baker's character is no Patrick Jane). I also tend to have two shows going at once, a (relatively) serious show that I watch with meals and a (relatively) fun show that I watch before bed. The latter currently is
Beverly Hills, 90210, which is also on Paramount+. It was on Hulu several years ago but not with all the episodes, so I had to download most of the later seasons. Looking forward to rewatching it all in good quality.
I'm on a bit of a Bruce Campbell kick.
You should follow
Joe's example here:
I'm watching Burn Notice and I think it's a lot like GTA
Burn Notice is one of the GOATs. I watched the Pilot when it premiered, followed it all the way through its run, and have rewatched it many times in the years since it wrapped. Unquestionably in my top 10 all-time. Phenomenal writing and such rich characters, especially the characterization of Michael (helped by great acting from Jeffrey Donovan). Also maybe the best use of the doppelgänger trope in TV history, so many cases/clients mirror aspects of Michael's past or conflicts experienced by Michael and his friends/family. And it's one of the few shows that never loses steam, it's amazing all the way to the end, and from the first time to the 50th time I've never made it through the finale with dry eyes. Truly exceptional TV.
If you like a good time traveller show, I can recomend travellers.
Really a great role of Will
It's not bad, but it's a lame version of
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. And it very quickly gets ridiculous with the sheer number of travelers there are. But the episode "001" and the character played by (and the performance delivered by) Enrico Colantoni is the best part of the show. He's a criminally underrated TV actor. He was hilarious as Elliot the photographer in
Just Shoot Me! and utterly brilliant and moving as the Sergeant and hostage negotiator leading the SRU in
Flashpoint. He does more great work in
Travelers. But if you like
Travelers, definitely give
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles a chance if you haven't seen it. Same basic storylines and conflicts except better mythology, better characters, better writing, and better action.
