I haven't read up on all the ins and outs of presidential pardons but isn't it pretty much if it's a federal case the president can pardon? I think maybe the only caveat is that he would have to 'formally' be convicted/admit to the crime? If so then yeah, Trump and the cult will have no problem playing the whole "Only admitting to guilt to secure the pardon, the charges are still politically motivated and BS" card.

I guess it would depend how fine of a line he walked. To me this hypothetical situation would be best for him since he wouldn't have to really battle Trump in the primaries, going back and forth with him and pissing off the MAGA faithful. If he could simply get that crowd by dangling the pardon, saying he is going to stand up for Trump without having to go full on MAGA mode which, like you said, could hurt him with the independents/moderates.
