Economy Trump Day 1 Executive Order: 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada with additional 10% on China

I'm almost certain he won't be putting 25% tariffs in place for Mexico and Canada. Hell, he's already changed his justification for the tariffs and it's not even December. It's pretty clear he's just using them as a threat and a negotiating/disrupting tool. The fact he upped it from 10% to 25% makes it even more obvious that it won't happen. He's an idiot but I don't think he's that big of an idiot. But hey, I could be wrong and he's dumber than I thought.
I'd like to think you're right but the Canadian parliament is in an emergency session (last I heard a little while ago on the news) and the PM is meeting with all the provincial premiers tomorrow; they don't sound like they think it's just a bluff. Having said that though, it could be contingency planning as well--that would be wise even if you think it's just for leverage in negotiations.

Sounds like his threat was effective then. More 4D chess from the GOAT

Neither did you, because it's some random shit ass panic wrestling lol

I grew up in BC and you think I never heard of the softwood lumber tarriff lmao

You don't know shit about Canadian politics

It has been a massive story here for DECADES

Do you even know how tariffs work? Imports/exports, you twat. Canada exports large amounts of raw materials for US manufacturing, for example, and softwood lumber which already has a tariff on it, for another. You sound like you're ready to cry now that you have realised you voted for this stupid shit but you don't even understand it.

I'm canadian, so no I didn't vote you senile old retard. But the point I'm making is US owned industries are so intertwined into the canadian economy (mining, banking, oil, automotive, retail, food) that tariffing canadian exports indirectly and directly means tariffing US companies from both ends (without Canada implementing any on it exports). The US doesn't benefit for cheap labor in canada, so it's not protecting any. The US benefits from cheap cdn dollar and a populace that buys their products and let's their companies own / buy thier industries out right.

It's essentially like putting tariffs on interstate commerce. Canada and the US have a very unique economic relationship. So either Trump is going to have to go his largest domestic backers and explain why they have to pay tariffs on goods and services they own in canada and bring to the US - and since trumps main focus is top rung enrichment, I ask what again is he going to tariff in Canada? They already outright own, or have a large direct investment stake in a plethora of our commerce in every sector.

Existing tariffs on dairy and soft wood lumber are due to cdn subsidies of which the US doesn't do as hard on those items. That's really a separate issue for several decades.

LOL @ Trump giving a fuck if they make any sense. They sound good to the rubes. By the time they feel the worst of the pain they will cause he'll be on the home stretch of his term.

Funny how you write like you quit school in grade 10 and say anything I've written here makes me sound like I'm senile or a retard.

And yes, the point is if he imposes these proposed tariffs it'll be really fucking dumb. That didn't stop him the last time he was in power, did it?

"During his first term, Trump imposed a 20-per cent tariff on softwood lumber — part of the ongoing decades-old row over the product — followed a year later by a 25-per cent tariff on steel and 10-per cent tax on aluminum products.

Prior to taking office in 2016, Trump had blasted the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and negotiations began in August 2017 when he was in the White House to carve out a new deal with Canada and Mexico, which remained underway by spring 2018 when Trump announced the tariffs on May 31, 2018.

Canada announced its own retaliatory tariffs on roughly $16.6 billion worth of steel, aluminum and hundreds of other products from the U.S., which also included things like maple syrup, shaving products, ketchup and even coffee."

They almost doubled the tarriff last month...

15% is pretty steep bud.

The main difference is the softwood lumber tarriff actually EXISTS it isn't just a theoretical thing CNN told you to cry and piss your pants about that isn't even going to happen.
Again, you are comparing a singular specific resource...

You don't seem to understand it's not comparable to the amount of consumer goods or essentials impacted.

Trump ran on tarrifs. You are a Trump stan. So riddle us this.....

What is Trump's tarrif policy out of his own mouth????? Its a real easy layup for you.
I can almost guarantee 2 things in your response though.

-1 The libs know and can explain what he said on Tarrifs better than you
-2 You will not directly engage the simple & innocuous question about the very own policy that you support.

So Trump is going to tariff ExxonMobil which owns 70% of Imperial Oil tariffs to import it's own product into its home country? Go after Pratt and Whitney, Yamana Mining? RBC investments? Their entire automative industry? His billionaire backers and his own investments probably aren't going to like that and since his main goal to enrich the top rungs, I seriously doubt he's going to pull the trigger on massive tariffs

I mean, you're a dropout, so you would know.

And yes, there have been longstanding existing tariffs between Canada and The US on agricultural and resources items before, during and likely after NAFTA / USMCA. But that's based on market controlled approaches to protect domestic growers, refiners and sellers.

"Canada maintained tariffs on dairy goods ranging from 241% for liquid milk to 298% for butter. The trade protection is an essential element of its national program to establish fair dairy prices and manage supplies. Regional milk marketing boards establish fixed prices for set volumes of production, which are allocated to farmers through a system of quotas.

LOL ok double pissbelt. We'll see what happens.

Now that the illiterates have finally sounded out what all inclusive flat steep rate tarrifs are months later....

You have to love that their defense for their Orange Jesus isn't how this is a good sound financial strategy.

Its literally "of course the President Elect is a liar & bad at math. It's 4d chess to threaten and bully our allies & neighbors with generic non thought out numbers that will hurt its citizens."
