International Trump becomes 1st sitting U.S. leader to enter North Korea

I'll take a wait and see policy.. Trump played a big card in a nonchalant manner. There's a reason no other president wanted to do what Trump has done.

Even though the Hermit nation is in the dark maybe offer a bit more legitimacy at the world stage could see NK more willing to give in to concessions. Or, NK further fuels propaganda vs the US and continues, making America look ignorant. But only on a media level. Really the risk vs reward was very small in this gesture but it's one less political card US diplomacy has with NK.

Any previous president could have done the same. That’s what North Korea has been wanting since the war. This is Kim’s achievement.

It's sad that low-information Trump supporters have no understanding of the historical dynamic. They actually think Trump meeting with the Supreme Leader of NK was something other presidents desperately wanted to do but were unable to achieve. When in reality the desire was always all on the North Korean side. And Trump has given them their big get twice now with nothing substantive gained in return.

But Trump's behavior makes sense given Rex Tillerson's account in his recent interview with the House Committee. Dumb Donny simply lacks the cognitive capacity for complex thought on foreign policy matters. Trump was probably told "No other president has met with the leader of NK since the war..." but couldn't follow the rationale behind the decisions of the previous Commander's-In-Chief. He just ran with the initial statement and became convinced that if he were the "first" it would be a huge win.

What do you mean this far? Obama could have called NK and they would have welcomed him at the border the next day. They crave that- being taken seriously y world powers.

NK needing that legitimacy is one form of the US's leverage in the debate though. I'll be happy to be surprised, but it appears Trump is blowing that leverage for a photoop. Obama probably happily would have walked over the line had any actual progress been made.
It could work in this case because KJU is just as needy and hungry for adoration as Trump is. He craves validation. Give him a taste of international praise because of willingness to compromise and it might go a long way to influencing his behavior.

South Korea's president did all the heavy lifting here. Previous presidents were even less willing to concede with N. Korea than Americans were. AFAIK President Moon is their first leader who took active steps towards this.

The two sided question of “would libs care if Obama did it?” and “would Rs be mad if Obama did it” really do not get us very far.

Albeit I am fairly sure Obama would not have done this (slap NK on the but cheek while throwing away progress with Iran), it’s also the kind logic that goes no where.

How about we stick to the point, is this a good idea, yes or no, and why? What is Trump expecting to accomplish here?

This is the only reason 'little' Kim crossed the border to South Korea:
I'm not even a cake guy but that thing looks good. Would step into enemy territory for a piece of that...

This is one of those 'If Obama did it, would Republicans be pissed?' questions.

And yes, they'd be blowing a headgasket if this happened 4 years ago, claiming both are Communists.

Personally, I really hope there is some kind of 'method to Trump's madness' in regards to his bromance to Kim Jong Un, because by the time he leaves office if there's not been any progress made into turning N.Korea into a.... less-insane less-nuclear armed country... its going to be the biggest.... 'Well, that didn't work out the way we hoped'.... aspect of his entire Presidency.

It doesn’t matter. Even if there is some diplomatic progress (which I highly doubt there will be) it’ll be undone by the next administration and restore pre-Trump administration level of diplomatic relationship.

Any actions by the U.S government with NK should have denuclearization as its ultimate objective, and it’s already been clear that NK will not denuclearize. Trump’s continuance of love letter writing and hand holding of Kim serves only to give NK a higher standing on the world stage and strengthens his status and legitimacy with his people.

There is a level of blind faith given to Trump by his supporters that ignores reason. It’ll get us “somewhere” with NK but that place will most likely not be denuclearization and might only have adverse effects.

For a brief moment there Trump had no security in North Korea. For a similar moment Jong Un had no security in South Korea, than the security 'shuffle' started between the U.S. Secret Service, North Korean security, and South Korean security for Moon Jae-in. Funny to watch. NK security clearly does not like the press that close to Jong Un. There is no press getting close to Jong Un in North Korea.

"Stephanie Grisham replaced Sarah Sanders as White House press secretary only recently, but Grisham reportedly has already been injured on the job.

Grisham suffered bruises when a scuffle broke out Sunday between North Korean security guards and members of the media trying to get close to President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as they shook hands at the Demilitarized Zone, the Associated Press reported."

It's nice to see a few Trump supporters acknowledge that this is not an accomplishment, and it's also not a sign of bravery. People seem to attach the strangest attributes to Trump's actions, seemingly grasping at straws to celebrate something.

No President was afraid to go to North Korea. They were just smart enough to recognize that humoring a murderous dictator for his own propaganda purposes is below the office. But Trump does these things for his own propaganda purposes, so it's now mutually beneficial for the first time in our country's history.

Negotiating with North Korea is fine. I have absolutely no trust in their leadership, but there is no harm in ongoing communication. But that was the stance of every President. The only difference here is that Trump has started a "bromance" with a dictator that is highly beneficial for that dictator. That is not an accomplishment, it's embarrassing.

No more participation trophies for Trump. He needs to accomplish something before being congratulated.

Getting in there for a positive purpose, talking instead of fighting, is always a diplomatic achievement
No, it isn't.

Sometimes it is a tool that despots use to legitimize their reigns, cement their authoritarian rule at home, and (as in the case of Hitler with Chamberlain) insincerely buy time while they advance their true cause behind the scenes.

True about staging, but going there with the purpose of diplomacy is still an achievement for any president.

Whether he gets anything done or not in regards to NK's denuclearisation, thats a great achievement.

It does speak to his willingness to solve the N Korea problem.

But I guess we should just shit all over him and his efforts because partisan politics are more important.

This thread turned into Mean Girls real fuckin fast: "Oh My GoD, tHeY lOoK sO fAaAaAt! LoOk EvErY bOdy!"

Is Trump gonna get a token Nobel Peace Prize like ol 44 did?

Trump has balls. Probably why some of the blue haired progresso eunuchs in here are so upset.

Imagine if Obama had gotten this far in the NK relations. People who are now TDS-suffering snowflakes would have been jubilant. But since Orange Man Bad these people are kvetching again as they always do regardless of what Trump actually does.

Because it's historic and the lefties want Trump erased.

Look at all these Rubes. Peppridge Farms remembers when Fox News was shitting all over Obama for even thinking about talking to Fat Boy Kim.
Now the Trump D Slurpers are fighting each other to get on their knees and properly thank Dear Leader Donny for taking a photo with Fat Boy Kim.
Could you Rubes make up your minds or do you wait for Fox News to tell you how to think?
You low energy Soy Boy Trump D Slurpers make it funny to read your posts.
