College Top 20 Running Backs All Time

There’s Barry and everyone else.

I do agree with one exception......Jim Brown.
Brown averaged over 100 yards a game for nine seasons or his career, he averaged over 5 yards a carry for that career. And he played defenses geared up to stop him, they couldn't do it..

Only WR Don Hutson back in the days of the slow white cornerbacks was more dominate for an era than Jim Brown.

Jim Brown was 6=2 230 pounds with 10.0 speed, a freak of nature, keep in mind D linemen were 260. and he could outrun those cornerbacks,. In a word...........amazing..

A guy I sould have mentioned but didn't, yep......DUH~

A 25-10 long jumper at Long Beach State

Christian Okoye...for the Tecmo Bowl bros.....

And Barry Word

Nobody compres to Bo Jackson, hell I could run him back to the one then turn around to the other one until I got bored with it.

While here....

Before Gale "Kansas Comet" Sayers and Walter "Sweetness" Payton, the Bears had Wilie "Wisp" Galimore my first RB hero.

They mention he never had a 1000 yard season, the reason was he shared carries with stud fullback Rick Casares,

Size with speed

Dupree was out leaned at the Mississippi State track Championship in the 100, the cat who beat him was future 9.93 world record holder Calvin Smith.

Highly recommend Willie Morris book The Courtship of Marcus Dupree, great read.

A litle off topic

As we know Al Davis had an obession with speed, so how did that happen?

Growing up he watched a lot of the Brooklyn Dodgers play baseball, they were always the faster team, they simply did everything at a superior speed. That made a big impact on him, so why not football?

The first speedy Raider was an Olympic long jumper out of Cornell, in 1960 he would win the silver, he was also a 9,5 sprinter, his name Irving "Bo" Roberson a WR..

A little later Daryl "Mad Bomber" Lamonica was throwing those bombs to former Texas Southerm 9.4 speedster Warren Wells, for around 4ish seasons that combo was deadly, Wells was scoring a lot and averaging over 20 yards a reception, he was a star.

If we look at just what did the Raiders have when it came to speeed it is mind blowing, there are countries that don;t come close to matching that Raider,,,,,zoooooooooooooooooooommmmmm~~~~~

Olympian****

lane

1.Cliff Branch 9.2 yards Colorado, 10.1ht
2,James Jett 10.16 West Virginia****
3,Jacoby Ford 10.01 Clemson
4.Wilie Gault 10.10 Tennessee****
5,James Trapp 10.14 Clemson
6.Ron Brown 10,06 ASU****
7,Sam Graddy 10.09 Tennessee****
8.Alvis Whitted 10.07 NCSt

USSR's Valery Borzov won his Olympic gold medal in 10.14,,,,,giving an example of how fast those above were.

"B"

lane

1.Bo Jackson Auburn, way faster than his 10.39PR
2.Rocket Ismail Notre Damn more 60 cat
3,Bo Roberson Cornell
4,Warren Wells Texas Southern
5.Stanford Routt 20.6 200m
6.Eugene White Florida A&M
7.Tim Dwight Iowa
8..Michael Bennett Wisconsin

All those above ran on their schools 4x1 team,

No other NFL team comes close to what we see up there,

Roots to the tree

College????

Ok can do that.

These schools only had a lone RB of any merit/substance in the pro game. Totally opposite of a USC or Auburn.

UOP....Dick Bass first Rams 1000 yard rusher
Furman....Chris Warren Seahawks
Azusa Pacific....Christian "Nigerian Nightmare" Okoye Chiefs
Humbolt....Wendell Hayes Chiefs
Washington & Jefferson...Deacon Dan Towler Rams
Texas Southern...Willie Ellison Rams
Prairie View.....Clemon Daneils first Raider 1000 yarder
Yale....Calvin Hill first Cowboys 1000 yard rusher
North Texas State.....Abner Haynes first Chiefs 1000 yard rusher
USF....Ollie Matson Olympic sprinter Hall of Famer Rams
Arizona.....Paul Robinson first 1000 yarder for the Bengals, 400 hurdler
UNLV....Icky Woods Bengals
Colorado State....Lawrence McCutheon Rams
NCA&T.....JD Smith Niners first HBCU 1000 yard NFL rusher
Western Illinois....Larry Garron Pats

At the other end of the Spectrum USC Trojans

Mike Garrett Heisman Chiefs
Sam "Bam/" Cunningham Pats all time leading rusher
Lynn Cain Falcons
Clarence Davis Raiders
Anthony Davis Buc's
Charles White Heisman Rms Cali State 300 hurdles champ
Marcus Allen Heisman Raiders HS QB
Frank Gifford Hall of Fame Giants
"Jaguar" Jon Arnett Rams NCAA long jump finalist
Ricky Bell Buc;s
Reggie Bush Heisman sorta Saints
O.J.Simpson Heisman Bills first 2000 season
LenDale White Titans

What other school compares to that?

Then there is Compton JC

Joe "Jet" Perry first black to have a 1000 yard season, first RB to have consecutive 1000 yard seasons.
Hugh "King" McElhenny would end up at Washington
Both were Niners both in the Hall of Fame, McElhenny a Cali hrdles champ.

As you can tell a history geek.buff.freak here,, just like sharing what took me decades to consume. Startied watching pro football around 1958ish, yep.....old timer.

Back then it was just the NFL

This NFL

West
San Francisco 49ers
Detroit Lions
Green Bay Packers
Baltimore Colts
Chicago Bears
Los Angelas Rams
East
Philadelphia Eagles
Pittsburgh Steelers
Cleveland Browns
Washington Redskins
New York Giants
St Louis Cardinals

In 1960 the Cowboys and Vikings showed up as did the AFL

West
Dallas Texans (Chiefs to be)
Los Angeles Chargers
Oakland Raiders
Denver Broncos
East
Boston Patriots
New York Titans
Buffali Bills
Houston Oilers

The reason that league made it was two reasons........sucked on defense so big score games and a lot of HBCU/small college athletes a lot of speed out there.

First "Star" of the league was a Texans RB Abner Haynes out of North Texas State, his RC one of my prize posesions, He was the first African American to play college football in Texas

In his North Texas uni
