Crime Trends in U.S. Cities: Mid-Year 2025 Update - Council on Criminal Justice

Homicide and other violent crimes continue to fall below pre-pandemic levels in a sample of 42 U.S. cities. CCJ’s mid-year 2025 analysis also shows a year-over-year decrease in 11 of the 13 offenses.

Looking at changes in violent offenses from the first six months of 2024 and 2025, the rate of homicides in the 30 study cities providing data for that crime was 17% lower, representing 327 fewer homicides. There were 10% fewer reported aggravated assaults, 21% fewer gun assaults, 10% fewer sexual assaults, and 3% more domestic violence incidents. Robbery fell by 20%, while carjackings (a type of robbery) decreased by 24%.

This study updates and supplements previous U.S. crime trends reports by the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) with data through June 2025. It examines monthly, half-year, and yearly rates of reported crime for 13 violent, property, and drug offenses in 42 American cities that have consistently reported monthly data over the past six years.

Please note the following limitations: The 42 cities are not necessarily representative of all jurisdictions in the United States. Not all cities published data for each offense (see the Appendix for which cities reported which offenses), and trends in offenses with fewer reporting cities should be viewed with extra caution. In addition, not all crimes are reported to law enforcement, and the data collected for this report are subject to revision by local jurisdictions.

If he's actually achieving these numbers by spending $2bn less his second administration is building one of the best anti-crime resumes in modern Presidential history. That's astonishingly good for Trump. I'm not sure I would want to troll that particular topic, and draw attention to it.

This recent election had an initiative to increase the sentences for minor offenses that comfortably passed. The message was heard.

The problem with CA in terms of crime is for like the past 40 years it has been one extreme or another. It's either been way too harsh or way too lenient. Some kind of middle ground needs to be established.

Mostly agree with the exception of the devotion to left-wing policies- yes and no. He has already shown that he will pull a Bill Clinton and go against the left if it is necessary to win. Including going against policies he has supported in the past (Trump and every other politician has done that, so no big deal in order to win). He is already checking boxes in the other direction- basically speaking against trans in girls' sports and GAC for children, not to mention moving in the opposite direction from defunding the police as in the OP. The question is whether the hardcore socialists and radical identity people (who make up about half the Dem party these days) on the left can let go of their clutched pearls and realize they are going to have to vote for someone like Newsom if they don't want the Reps to continue to control government in the US. People like AOC, Bernie, and Mamdani are never going to win national elections or any election outside of abundant far left voters.

I've been familiar with him since he was a mayor. He knows what he needs to do to win and is willing to do it; he has always been that way.
