Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

Some of you are hilarious...probably the best part of the announcement was when he said he was going to continue/use an Obama national emergency...totally destroying the argument that it is not a real national emergency.

Did you miss the post above yours where Trump himself says its not an emergency?

I like how people keep saying this, yet we make massive, record breaking drug busts at the border with regularity. We spend twice the amount needed to build a barrier on illegal immigrants each year. 100's die each year just making the attempt to cross the border. Wages stagnate because of our shitty border enforcement. Human trafficking is far from an uncommon occurrence.

What do we really gain by not having a better physical barrier?Nothing.
You destroy your own argument by pointing out this is an ongoing problem "with regularity". that is by definition not an emergency,in the way his Constitutional powers were created.

Those powers are tied to 'an immediate need, where the POTUS taking something to the Congress and the time that would require would cause severe harm to the country'. Such as an invasion or war, or a Natural disaster response that needed immediate action.

Trump cannot have an emergency that has been going on for his 2 years in office (and long before that) that he ignored prior and that Congress had time to debate and just refused because they did not agree with his assessment.

An 'emergency' is not congress disagreeing with a POTUS over a campaign issue.

For blue collar laborer positions? Of course. Unquestionably.

Those aren’t the only stagnant wages though. I would say a very small % of wages being stagnant are tied to illegal immigrants.

To combat this people should attend a 4 year university as the wages for those people seem to grow.

Don't worry TDS patients, I'm sure a liberal like judge will block this soon.

I see a couple of solid 7's and a firm 5.

It's gotten plenty of serious attention, that's why apprehensions have been dropping for two decades. Bush and Obama both sent record numbers of troops to the borders during their tenures.

And the apprehensions were higher in 2016, why wasn't it an emergency then?

It then dropped to a 40 or 50 year low in 2017 without building a wall, so why is an emergency wall that will take more than a decade to build suddenly the solution? Other than because DJT used it as a campaign slogan?

If we need a wall so badly why didn't it have enough support to compel legislators to fund it democratically in the last two years when the gop controlled every branch of government?

I'm not even against building walls and fences where they are needed, but this is a pretty clear abuse of emergency power.

Politicians and Congress don't have your best interests in heart. The wall idea is what Trump's base wants. They won the election, they should get the wall. With or without the political sluts you refer to as Senators and Congresmen.

Trumps and his administrations very words are going to be used against them in the courts. RIP republican 2020 ticket.

We shall see. {<shrug}

I don't think the American Public (The Majority) wants Socialism to replace Capitalism here.

The "disaffected class of people" who want socialism will still be far less than the many who don't, imo.

Count on this to be one of the Main Campaign issues brought up(and it's a big one).
that's not the question.

No one wants socialism. the question is 'can Trump continue to convince Trumptards that anything but giving all the money to the super rich, is socialism and will they continue to eat that up.'

Yeah, trump only has support from like 30% of the people. So you are right, a majority don't want a trump dictatorship. Just the worst 30% seem to.

Many don't want Socialism either.

So which is it? Pick and fucking choose. o_O

Billionaires should definitely be taxed at a much higher rate.

He was trying to go through the House and Senate. Ryan dropped the ball when R's still held the House and now Dems hold it and all he asked for was a little over 5 billion but enough Dems won't give him anything close to that so he used this totally legal tool he has as POTUS.

and the Emergency provisions are designed for when the POTUS DOES NOT have time to try and go through the House and Senate.

He was given the power to bypass when time was of the essence and response was needed now, not after Congress and the Senate convened sessions to debate.

In all other instances where that time is not of the essence then it is required to go through Congress, to be debated and for them to agree or not with the spending priority.

it is undeniable he had the time (ie not an emergency) to have Congress debate this. He just lost the vote and is trying to find a way around that loss.

You really should try to understand the issue if you are going to continue to speak on it.

Hey griz, the solution is that they all need to have AFROS!! <DC-Champ><DC-Champ><DC-Champ>

That would make them more attractive to the libs here. <GrassoBless>

Leftists...fuck it....I'm calling them Liberals even though they're really not as far as the definition goes..

Liberals here are arguing semantics now with a fucking word. Hilarious. <Lmaoo>

Dude get your facts fucking straight.

it is Trump you are mad at for not agreeing with you. Argue with him about his 'semantics'.

“But — and I used an example. And this isn’t necessarily what was said, but whatever was said, the wall’s 50 feet high. Is it going to be 45 feet or 40 feet? That could very well be. That could very well — he wants it to be higher.” — Republican presidential debate

(damn how Trumps stream of twitter consciousness exposes you guys and his own idiocy)

You just said "No one wants Socialism". Why would his base think otherwise in ANY case? <Huh2>

lmao. this is really dumb, glen. even by your standards.

Americans don't want dictatorships either. Well, i guess some do.

man that's one ugly crowd. can't remember the last time I've seen that many ugly together in one place. probably had to be the last time I watched a Chiefs game. Oh and they definitely look poor.
Fixed that for ya.

Hey! I'll have you know...my standards are pretty high. <Moves>

But when I see you mock people for the way they look just 'cause of who they support, it's really amusing.

Especially considering many on the Left aren't exactly winning any Beauty Contests either. <{outtahere}>

lol @ quoting the unseen base (aka Silent Majority, it's called). I've already pointed out that it's larger than anyone thinks 'cause many don't answer the Pollsters when they call.

Anyway, it's still a long way 'till 2020.

The Dems are already beginning to wreck themselves by supporting the Ludicrous Green New Deal which embraces Socialism to a tee.
I'd say we have a pretty good idea of who those voters are from the last election. I don't think Trump is gaining new support, so a big dem turnout will be very bad for him, especially in the states that narrowly flipped after voting blue every election since 2000. We'll see, I do agree a really progressive platform could backfire in those states.
