Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

  • Total voters
    92
  • Poll closed .
I like how people keep saying this, yet we make massive, record breaking drug busts at the border with regularity. We spend twice the amount needed to build a barrier on illegal immigrants each year. 100's die each year just making the attempt to cross the border. Wages stagnate because of our shitty border enforcement. Human trafficking is far from an uncommon occurrence.

What do we really gain by not having a better physical barrier?Nothing.
The question is not what do you gain. The questions are, what will be the cost, monetarily and environmentally (probably the biggest issue for the people who live there), and isn't it likely the money could be better spent elsewhere since the rate of illegal border crossers has been declining while overstays and import of drugs through ports and other points of entry are increasing? The follow up question is how is a problem that is diminishing in severity a fucking emergency?

You think wages are stagnant because illegals?

I just read an article about this issue written by the Harvard Business Review and word illegal is not mentioned once and neither is the word immigrant.

I don't think the American Public (The Majority) wants Socialism to replace Capitalism here.

Americans don't want dictatorships either. Well, i guess some do.

Trump just said he didn't need to do it. so its not a national emergency it's a political decision.

Some of you will just never understand Trump. He probably was saying that he didn't need to do this because Congress should have given him adequate funding for border security including enough for a wall/barrier/fence...but since they won't he is now declaring the emergency.

I never underestimated it. Where did you get that impression? I literally said this is all part of his plan to get those typical stay at home voters out to vote for him again 2020 like they did 2016. They're his key to victory much more so that swing voters.

True but the key remains with the Independents.

They tend to be more pragmatic about things when they go and vote like : Is the Economy doing well? Unemployment down?

That sort of thing.

If by 2020, the Economy is still going strong (for example), that might lean them toward voting for Trump than against him.

Or failing that, vote for the Starbucks guy. (either way, the Dems candidate won't get their vote)

Yes, it definitely appears that his most ardent supporters would be totally OK with a Trump dictatorship, as though things would go totally back to normal afterward. Fucking short-sighted gimps.

With Trump, he was able to cater to a broader base. He got people to vote for him who normally don't bother voting. That's why the Trump base matters in the election. Sadly less than half of this country actually goes and votes. So getting people off the couch matters

He keeps throwing red meat to them so that they show up once more, and reminds the moderates/swing voters of the Supreme Court pick if RBG makes it another two years. Dems keep passing kill your baby the day before it gets born abortion laws in their states and that's Trump's path to victory again

No, there's people who voted for him, and then there's his base. His base are the kinds of people who will support him no matter what. A lot of people voted for him because they had enough of the status quo and thought he would be different. Those people aren't his base though, but they are who won him the election. Finish the Wall is great for his base, but people turned out (in admittedly exaggerated numbers) and voted for Make America Great Again.

I’m actually proud of the fact I don’t understand Trump. I’d be nervous if I did

He got 1.4 billion for border security including fencing. Is a fence a wall now?

Yes. They are both walls. And the "fence" is much like a wall.

This conversation is frivilous.
