Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

  • Total voters
    92
  • Poll closed .
What are you talking about? Congress gave POTUS power to do this under National Emergencies Act. POTUS declaring National Emergencies is not a new thing. A lot of you just don't like it because it is President Trump.

Or because it’s not a National Emergency. Wonder why he waited 2 years to handle this “emergency”

Ha. You act like hard facts matter

There are areas of the slat wall that were put in place to replace older fencing along the border in the highest traffic areas. He'll have clips of that on loop and that he needs 4 more years to span the whole 1900 mile border. Trumpian base will eat it up.

I don't think his base matters. Swing voters do, and he got just enough in just the right places to win last time.

That said, what I expect him to do is use the fact that the democrats are challenging this emergency declaration to pull on heart strings by looping footage of Nancy saying ''not one dollar'' and faces of people who have been killed by illegal immigrants. That's a spicey meatball.

Trump just said he didn't need to do it. so its not a national emergency it's a political decision.

No, people don't like it because it's not an emergency. It's a GOP manufactured emergency. Show me an example of another president declaring a national emergency over something that was not an actual emergency.

Court system will be the check on this. Court mandated stay on any construction work or land seizure until a formal ruling will be the first move I would wager

Pretty much this.

But everything is going to culminate at the SCOTUS.

We've known that from the start.

May come back to haunt him when it goes to litigation. Looks to me to me he is declaring this emergency out of convenience

This is of course assuming that most Americans actually know what Socialism is.
I would bet the answer is no, which is why it's so easy to dupe them with accusations that "socialists" are trying to destroy America.

Edit: case in point,
You also forgot the little thing called SOCIALISM that the Democrats seem to be embracing with the Green New Deal.

He can also use that as point of attack which only helps his Campaign. "A vote for Democrat is a vote for Socialism".

He's already got that part figured out

Whatever negative things you can say about Trump, he has shown to be excellent at running an election campaign

This sets a terrible precedent for American politics. He'll, maybe it will eventually be a good thing because the dems will use this move the next time they are in the white house too. Hopefully that will push more people to the center. Citizens are too divided now and something needs to change.

Meh, the emergency won't work. Hopefully it gets people to notice how afraid the left is of a secure border though.

I wouldn't underestimate the "Trumpian base" that you say with such disdain.

As we found out in 2016, that base is larger than anyone thinks.

With Trump, he was able to cater to a broader base than a typical Republican or Democrat. He got people to vote for him who normally don't bother voting. That's why the Trump base matters in the election. Sadly less than half of this country actually goes and votes. So getting people off the couch matters

He keeps throwing red meat to them so that they show up once more, and reminds the moderates/swing voters of the Supreme Court pick if RBG makes it another two years. Dems keep passing kill your baby the day before it gets born abortion laws in their states and that's Trump's path to victory again

That's what Trump said about his penis and we all know how that turned out.

I never underestimated it. Where did you get that impression? I literally said this is all part of his plan to get those typical stay at home voters out to vote for him again 2020 like they did 2016. They're his key to victory much more so that swing voters.

I like how people keep saying this, yet we make massive, record breaking drug busts at the border with regularity. We spend twice the amount needed to build a barrier on illegal immigrants each year. 100's die each year just making the attempt to cross the border. Wages stagnate because of our shitty border enforcement. Human trafficking is far from an uncommon occurrence.

What do we really gain by not having a better physical barrier?Nothing.
