Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

So how did Trump "play nice"? He offered nothing and tried to publicly shame them. Where is the "playing nice" part?

What actually happened is Trump tried to bully Democrats and Pelosi schooled him and he took a big fat L. Now is using a very questionable tactic that will likely get held up in the courts and end up being a political hand grenade for Repulbicans. Also, he will be taking funds away from jobs that need funding (like rebuilding Puerto Rico).

Didn't Puerto Rico have trouble handling simple water bottle distribution? They need to solve their own issues first before wasting Trumps time. He played nice by even asking the Dems. We all know the wall is needed.

That response seems disproportionately dickish to the one you quoted.

No, it's also based upon past history with Farmer Brown. He's also a guy who supported the 13 billion dollar farmer bailout . He claims to be libertarian but does not actually support libertarian policy. I was harsh (maybe a bit too harsh) but accurate.

This executive order won’t work. Too many skilled politicians on the left and they will outsmart Trump like we outsmart our children.

In other news Trump is still obese

And you're still clueless.

Such is life. <Gordonhat>

We all know? Then why don't the majority of Americans agree with you?

Looks like you dont realize the actual negative impact illegal immigration has on this country. It's not immigration that's the problem.. its ILLEGAL immigration.

Securing the border is arguably a national security issue. Which is part of the president's job. "Climate change" is supposedly a global phenomenon which cannot be solved just by the United States. Any measures taken on that front unless applied globally will mean nothing, and effectively gut the industrial and manufacturing abilities of the United States and tank our economy. At least the kind of measures that some Democrats call for. So yeah I'd be pissed if a Democrat president tried to declare a "National Emergency" on what is touted as "Global Climate Change"

Oh, I see. Anything Trump supports is a legitimate emergency but anything else doesn't count. Or is that anything you don't think is an emergency? Btw, the term is loosely defined by the law so your feelings on it don't matter.

BTW, sine we live on the planet, climate change hurts us too. The point, which seems to elude you, is this process allows the president to circumvent the normal process to declare a national emergency according to his/her own views. It's a terrible precedent. And you're too stubborn to think through it.

Probably because their country was destroyed, but I don't see your point. Their issue was their island was decimated by a hurricane. And as a decent human and a patriot we should provide aid, just like we should if this happened anywhere else.

Quite frankly your view is disgusting and your view of Trump shows a real lack of morals. Finally, your view of Trump's power is wrong and quite weird. They're a co-equal branch of government so talking to them isn't "playing nice" wtf?

At least you fully embrace your ignorance.

Not sure if raiding earmarked defense monies is the answer to the wall situation.
The 30 yr old missile pact with russia is set to expire in august, bringing an end to almost
50 yrs of agreed upon non-proliferation treaties. And china is another huge problem.
They've been stockpiling 100s if not 1000s of ground-based long range missiles for years now.

The US is far behind in weapons capabilities and deterrence in this realm and robbing defense coffers
to win a PR battle seems unwise IMO.

Yeah I lack morals for wanting American border security that's desperately needed.

If only illegal immigration is the problem why have Republicans also been pushing to limit legal immigration? So if Trump uses national emergency powers to build his wall I quite sure you will have no problem if president Harris/Biden/Warren declare national emergency to begin to implement Medicare for all?

I see you're saying it's a bad precedent.. our own border security and the endless caravans of illegals crossing our borders show that it's not just an emergency because Trump says so, it is an actual emergency.

Maybe you're too stubborn to realize that taking on 3rd world illegal aliens comes at a cost to the American citizens. Drugs, gangs, crime, murders, increased costs of healthcare because they dont have insurance and the cost is passed along to those that do (American citizens).

But I suppose none of that really matters

No, the wall is not a national emergency and I'll just ignore the propaganda stuff because it's not interesting.

Let me ask you why didn't Trump declare it a national emergency as soon as he was in office? He ran on building a wall so it's not a new idea.

I wouldn't support it. No. The healthcare system in America is shit I can agree, but the sheer cost of implementing Medicare for all, plus overall quality of healthcare going down makes me opposed. The money for a wall is peanuts compared to what you're proposing here.

Yeah he ran on it. Yes the Republicans had a majority. But not all were Trump supporters, you could've easily called many Democrats in the way they opposed the president.

Its was a giant load of shit politics at the expense of the American Citizen

It’s going to get tied up in legal battles through the next presidential election, Trump will need to run again without having built a wall. That’s the win the democrats were fighting for. If he’s successful in getting the wall built through this mechanism, meaning he wins in 2020, you’ll have some junior socialist party member nationalizing healthcare with equal or greater legitimacy in 2024. Worst case for the democrats, theyre empowered to rapidly push their legislative agenda through the executive branch, and they’ve got a useless wall to keep up.

the POTUS is like a petulant child.

- Stamps feet and turns down deal in excess of $20B for border wall and enhanced security

Demands more

- Get offer for $1.6B for wall and security. Accepts but then turns down when Ann Coulter spanks him

Stamps feet and tries to bully Nancy Pelosi demanding $5.5B

- Gets offer for $1.3B after Pelosi spanks him

Trump dick tucks, accepts deal and claims this is a victory and demonstration of his Art of the Deal negotiating power.

<TheDonald>

Next offer from Nancy would have been $0.5B. Because when you are dealing with a petulant child you treat them like a petulant child and reduce the benefit each and every time until they figure out what is happening and agree.
