Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

Only got into TNG myself. Tried DS9 but it just wasn't the same anymore. Data, Worf, Q, Picard, Trois fine ass...loved that show. Except Wesley. He was the Mary Corleone of that show.

I mean, the pilot of season 1 was very promising.
But teh whole season wasn't that good in the end.
I rewatched a few weeks ago, and I actually thought it was better when I was able to binge it. There were a couple gems in season 1, but the story overall wasn't great. It's a kinda new team doing seasons 2 and 3 and they have brought back a bunch of TNG and DS9 vets to work on it. Terry Metalas(the new showrunner, got his start writing on season 3 and 4 of Enterprise and has gone on to showrun some great shows. The preview in the readyroom looks very promising.

Strange New Worlds looks interesting.

not really digging the Spock casting nor the fact they’ve already cast Kirk for season 2.

Heard Discovery was awful.

I preferred even number TOS films. TNG all seasons. First Contact was great. I was hit and miss with DS9. I liked the Way of the Warrior two-parter. The 2009 Star Trek and 2013 Into Darkness I liked, and I thought 2016's Beyond was good, too.

I was actually pretty impressed with Ethan Peck's acting as Spock. I am curious about Kirk being brought in so early. Wonder how that will work with Pike and Number One. Maybe we will get Commodore Pike with Number one as captain and new first officer Kirk.

I think it's good TV. Seriously, the production values are high, there is a lot of action, some of the characters are interesting, the story arcs are aggressive... There is far worse sci-fi on the air. I'd recommend giving it a try.

That being said, I went from "it's OK" to "I'm having to twist my own arm to keep watching any of this." Not because I think it is bad TV in itself, but similar to what I said about Stargate: Universe in another thread - it's a radical tone shift from old Trek. More than that, it (let's say the new wave of Trek in general, though I obviously haven't seen Strange New Worlds) is a radical philosophy shift in a show that was all about philosophy. It's an angry, dark, broody, post-colonial re-imagining of Star Trek that is constantly apologizing for the core Enlightenment/age of discovery values which were what Star Trek was all about. It's just not what I signed up to see Trek for. I'm also not a huge fan of these people basically wanting to re-write both Trek's past and Trek's future, locking any future projects into the story they're creating.

So, give it a try. People do (I think) genuinely like it. You might be one of them, so it's all worth a shot. It just feels like someone who is trying to atone for the philosophical project of decades of previous Trek is running the show now, and they are trying to appeal to a younger audience that wants more things to blow up and more people screaming. I don't know if I'll be going with it much longer.

Bump.
So what's the opinion's with the new season on going?

Spoiler ahead:

Q being back, his new anger issues and issues?
Brent spiner playing another soong?
New Guinan and the problems no being consistent with tng timeline?
Who doesnt kinda like evil Picard?
Wtf is with Agnus and the borg queen.

As a guy who has watched all of the star trek TV shows many, many, many times. like 20+ times each. Enterprise is #2 and Deep Space Nine is clearly #1.

I dont vote stuff in for nostaliga. TNG was fine but it looks really old and dated.

picard latest episode lol immigrition bus guy is saying we will go home well you are going home where you came from lol. and when they introduced that too i said enough already. i mean american tv there is logical time and place for everything race baiting is not for star trek immigration issues is not for star trek space exploration battles in space how life would be in space is for starr trek, but is woke culture so every show because woke can not make any shows that would be their agenda vocal point because it will be crying and more crying so they infiltrate shws that have nothingg to do with it in history of it or now

Every star trek series has episodes that explore prevalent social issues.

I think Q is giving Soong the DNA to make the Khan like super soldiers.

You'd enjoy this episode of Deep Space Nine on the immigration front.

Then, there is always this ToS classic on the race front:

Luckily, they were really subtle and tactful about bringing race into that episode, so you hardly even know it was happening.

Look you can read what I think of Discovery and Picard just a few posts up (2771), but if the idea is that Star Trek never touched hot-button issues like race and immigration, you're off your rocker. I have a lot of problems with the new shows - again, see above - it's not that it approaches these types of issues.

it is nothing like woke today. i mean they always need to make somebody all out bad and somebody all out vitims that can not do no wrong. i mean if there were woke based shows it would be cry cry cry mean guy tell something cry cry cry we good better then you then again mean guy telling mean stuff and again cry cry cry. after one show it would be boring and unwatchable. so they go to generational shows like star trek to unload their wokenes like it is main stream
