Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

Honestly, Lower Decks might not measure up to the original series or Next Generation, but it's far better than Voyager and Enterprise.

I’d say it’s far better than Discovery, Picard or the Abrams movies, and is the best Star Trek we’ve got in 15 years, but it’s definitely not better than Enterprise or Voyager.

STLD writers have a fairly evident love of the shows in all variations, and the characters live up to the ideals of the Federation.

I agree with the first part, that the writers are well versed in Trek lore just given all the numerous references to all the old shows. But I don’t agree with the second part at all, about the characters living up to the ideals of the federation. These characters are all complete messes. Boiler is like an amalgamation of Harry Kim or cadet Nog with Reginald Barkley, while Mariner is like an amalgamation of Michael Burnham with Tom Paris or B’Lana Torres.

Opening 2 mintues of Season 3 of Discovery. Comes out this Thursday.

Discovery? I've never heard of it.

Finished season 1 of Lower Decks. The scene with the Titan is so similar to the scene in the Picard season 1 finale when Riker shows up on the Ching Chong Wing Wong, but it’s done so much better. It’s just the little touches that make all the difference, like using the Titan, having Troi there, and the use of the TNG music. Brought a smile to my face.

Season 2 will follow both the Cerritos and the Titan. I loved the Titan novels and honestly wanted them to make a Titan series. The ship was badass, and it had the most diverse crew in star fleet. It was a heavily armed endurance science ship/

You can tell how huge of a trek fan The Lower Decks showrunner is. Every episode is just jam packed with fan service.

Star Trek Discovery new season? Season three premier just dropped, it was surprisingly good.

Did it?

Well I’m going to wait for the season to finish first, and then I’ll consider it based on the feedback the show gets around here from everyone except @sverre054 as he actually likes Kurtzman-Trek.

I still dislike the main protagonist. That said, she seems well written in the first episode, I just don't like the actor.

So I just watched it. Burnham episode, but this was surprisingly enjoyable.

I like that despite the bleak future featured in the episode, it didn't have a dark tone. It had fun and bright-hearted moments, and that one character who personified hope in the ideals of The Federation. The other guy was really good too, kind of a Han Solo feel to him. Plus, the cat. Have to respect a space pirate with a cat.

@Loiosh

The Star Wars parallels were a bit over the top, but I did like the new characters. I also think the dilithium thing they introduced as the downfall of the federation makes a lot of sense to me, though personally I think revisiting this might also have done the trick:

Lots of interesting stories to be explored based on the degrader. What I did not quite get is: did the suit deliver the signal from the 32nd century and stay there - or did it disappear in the wormhole?

I thought 1st episode of Discovery was a good reset. The first and past parts were well done, but the middle had too much Star wars and just band sci tropes for me. I thought the new main character Booker, was a good addition and humanizes Burnham, which has always been an issue with the way she is written. It was fun seeing a pretty interesting mix of species on the planet. We finally saw another Laurian(Morns people) 7.5/10
