Social The Divided States of America - A discussion of the problems and potential solutions.

Besides a complete overhaul, which I think should happen, a good start would be to introduce philosophy, and psychology into students curriculum as early as possible. Not just options in highschool. I dont know how it gets done, but fundamentally we need our children to be better at sensemaking especially with these new technologies they will have to interface with. Thats a great start imo.

There is no solution. No one on either side wants to hear the other side spew their bullshit anymore. The time where the US stood unified on most issues is long gone and it's not coming back. Welcome to the new reality.

There is no solution , the left are unsalvageable and just need to be rounded up in a cargo net and flung into cecot, then outright ban bluesky and reddit to shut off the mental illness factory.

Americans are so fucked up because they refused to acknowledge that the founding fathers were just humans and have refused to update their democracy ever since.

Separate progressives, center-left, center-right and MAGA from each other and then have them form coalitions in order to govern.

It will come back once Donald Trump is out of the picture, unless another Donald Trump rises and leads the country into division.

The only person I've ever put on Ignore is that Heretic dude, or whatever that jackass with the Joffrey AV is called. Congrats on being the second. You bring absolutely nothing of substance to these boards.

Have fun in your safe space, snowflake.

I think you misunderstood. I’m talking about facts being the ultimate arbiter. If people are lying about current events or revisioning history, that is not helpful or useful to any of us. If information is a running fresh water river, I’m talking about looking for ways to stop sewage from spilling into that river.

AI is only as good as the programmers that write and maintain the code and the data they use to train the models. Grok recently responded to a post with a statistic that right wing political violence makes up over 70% of documented incidents and Musk chimed in that Grok "would be fixed." If the fact checkers have no interest in facts that don't support their ideology, what good are the fact checkers?

It’s sad and I agree. Fact checking used to actually mean something.

You're more optimistic than I am.
I think an important first step is to restore the Fairness Doctrine, and ideally craft the law so that media like podcasts and things (at least some types of them) are covered as well. That’s when everything started going downhill imo—once the Fairness Doctrine was abolished.

It’s vitally important that media present contrasting views. Like many of the ills that beset us today, the Reagan administration is to blame for killing the Fairness Doctrine. But I think we could solve a lot of this polarization by making media present both sides of a story, issue, or argument.

I mean there are a lot of things that rich republicans and rich democrats agree on, its just that rich republicans are scared the fuck out of Trump so they do his bidding.

That's actually a pretty solid idea. I agree.

I'm extremely pessimistic that it will ever get better.
Yeah it will happen again. People are crazy. I don't remember last assassination on a president candidate or just a conservative influencer. Then you had a guy killing a few democratic congress members. Crazy times.

Sounds vague and difficult.

Why not create something like the Ministry of Information? We could call it the Disinformation Governance Board. It could really keep a lid on the dangerous rhetoric on the internet and regulate approved media outlets.

Go look at what the left is still trying to do to Kirk even now.

So no there can be no peace or "coming together".

yeah there was a good example in the UK the other day when Musk appears virtually at some rally and tells the people of the UK that “violence is coming” and that “you either fight back or you die”.

Now would a tech billionaire with a massive social media platform be doing this out of the good of his heart? or is it possible that in a climate where 'civil war' is being mooted all the time, more people will spend more time doom-scrolling or rage-scrolling twitter, thus driving his advertising revenue?
Plus... that's what he said out loud to people and what he have been posting on his account. What we don't see is how he turns the algorithm on the platform he owns. "Oh the algorithm naturally props up what's engage people and people is better engaged by anger", that may be true but I definitely feel like he intentionally turn it up a notch taking away reach of more moderate posts and props up more of the divisive ones. It is in his economic, political and societal interest.
