Yea I get it, in the sense that it can (supposed to) be seen as a Kickstarter of sorts for discussion. Somewhat because it's not as high on the list as it should be, and to raise awareness on the parties and public. But where I think she dropped the ball, and what her biggest weakness is in general, is that she went too far on the proposed ideas. When you're talking about removing airplanes and all electric cars in 12 years it's going to get ridiculed by a large amount of people, even some moderate democratic voters. She was right at the peak of being in the spotlight and could have used it to shine a more reasonable awareness light mainstream. With her throwing in radical ideas with a few decent ones, it made it far too easy to dismiss based on the radical ideas. That's why I feel it was terrible. The mainstream highlights of her GND were the absurd plans. I understand she is the progressive etc, but she needs to take a few pages from Bernie and learn when/how to hit. Not everything has to be a home run swing.
I do think it's something we need to start acting on a bit better. One day, it'll all catch up to us. Not in our lifetime, but maybe our grandkids one. Either way, I'd rather be safe than sorry so I do hope something is done to address it.
A few things I think keep getting mixed up and misunderstood in this conversation. AOC didnt pull the 12 years number out of her booty. That number came from the United Nations. Not some small university in Arizona, the United Nations and the world's leading scientists.
If we have 12 years to do something, why are we talking about small changes? Big changes are going to be necessary to actually solve the problem. This is an urgent issue, and people are acting like we have all the time in the world to solve it. We don't. There is a time clock on this.
I don't understand why people are focusing on these parts of the conversation that don't really matter. Whether it's 12 years from now, or 35 years from now, this shit IS going to come to a head. If you dont feel the effects, it's going to be your kid, or your grandkids that do.
Even if you dont believe in global warming, you have to believe in math. Rising populations means more consumption, fewer resources, and more pollution. We have literal islands of garbage the size of France in the ocean, horrible air in major cities, and dirty water. This is only going to get worse if we don't make changes.
And to those changes, again, the GND is not saying ban airplanes and that there will be no plane travel in the next 12 years. The whole point is for us to start doing SOMETHING. Because we aren't taking this shit serious at all. Instead of talking about climate change, more people are talking about how stupid AOC is.
I do wish you guys would put aside your irritation or bias towards her and actually listen to the plan. I posted a video of her speaking about the issue earlier in this thread. She addresses these false claims of banning cows and airplanes, and that she is realistic on what can be done.
This shouldn't be a "left" issue. We all live on this planet. It truly is baffling to me how people are arguing against plans to clean up the environment.
