Taking Beatings & Forgetting Names

Just a stylistic question: how are you slipping that jab, and how do YOU prefer to slip in general? I know guys that work wonders with sharp jerks of the head almost exclusively, maybe with a little shoulder dip to add an inch or two. I'm a guy who works with a more obvious and committed slip... if I'm slipping outside a 2 for example, my body positioning is similar to how I would throw my own cross, if a little exaggerated. I think my success rate on the slip itself is a little less because of it, but on the flip side it puts me in an ideal coiled spot to explode out of with a counter, and I find even if I get brushed with the shot I can still throw a nice counter.

You working on flowing into the counter just had me wondering.

Impressive roadwork btw

I use a lot of side to side movement even when I am not necessarily slipping shots. If I am going to slip a jab from an orthodox fighter, I prefer to make it a quick jerk of the head, but I sometimes make the movement too big. Sometimes that works well, and I break at the waist a bit more, which lets me go to the body with a right uppercut/shovel hook.

If I am slipping a straight right hand, I think it may be similar to what you are doing, as far as exaggerating the movement. I am really trying to consciously put myself in position to start landing left hooks to the body after slipping right hands, so I need to emphasize getting as far forward on that slip as possible. Landing this counter effectively and consistently has been a problem.

Thanks for the roadwork compliment.

Anytime I slip and break at the waist I tend to exaggerate it way too much, I find that short head jerks work better for me.

Nice sparring though. Do you prefer to do more 2 minute rounds instead of less 3 minute ones?

Absolutely prefer 2 minute rounds. That's the time I compete in, and the pacing for a 3 minute round is very different than a 2 minute round. 2 minutes gives you just amount of time to where you need to haul ass and get your punch volume up. There was another coach at our gym for a while who had all of his amateurs sparring 3 minute rounds because he thought it would increase their conditioning. Come fight night, all of them were less busy than they should have been, spent more time waiting, etc.

If I was a pro, I'd spar 3 minute rounds. As an amateur, I spar 2's.

I completely agree. Our coach makes us do three minute rounds, and I'm not one to argue, but I would prefer to simulate competition.

We'll do 3 minute rounds at times if there are open fighters who need work, but it's 2 minutes for the most part.

Yeah man, thanks for the reply. For that left hook counter off of the outside slip, make sure you are stepping with that left foot and gliding the right up behind it AS you are slipping. Don't remain stationary, you will be in range to rip the hook and also will cut your angle MUCH tighter on your way out.

reading brandon's posts make it clear why i ate countless hooks... fuckers got a strategy for everything, i just tried to punch him in the face

Hmm.

Teh Missus dropped a lot of weight after swapping out the weights for more boxing, yes?

Is there a possibility of MacRea/Chatz in '09?

Good advice, thanks. I definitely end up reaching for it at times, leading to me getting countered and looking stupid.

No, no chance of that happening.

Wednesday, July 22nd

Definitely on for the August 1st card at Kings Gym in Oakland. Fight will be at 160 pounds. I am a few pounds over, but nothing that requires drastic measures.

Jump Rope: 12 Minutes

*add Weight Vest*

Shadow Boxing (Mirror): 5 x 3 Minute Rounds
Shadow Boxing (Ring): 5 x 3 Minute Rounds
Rope Drills: 3 x 3 Minute Rounds
Heavy Bag: 2 x 2 Minute Rounds
DE Bag: 2 x 2 Minute Rounds
Sparring: 5 x 2 Minute Rounds
Heavy Bag: 3 x 2 Minute Rounds

Calisthenics: Sit-ups, Push-ups, Chin-Ups, Floor-to-ring Apron Tuck Jumps, Neck Work

Notes: Sparring has been really crowded lately. That's good in some ways and bad in others. It's good to get some new looks, but you end up with less rounds and more rest. One good thing that I like is that we are lowering the rest periods to about 10-20 seconds. So, you might only get 2-3 rounds in at a time, but the fatigue is there from the lack of rest. Need to remember to keep the head moving throughout, and dont just slip to one side. Stopped a guy with a body shot today for the first time. He raised his left elbow a bit higher than he should have to counter what he thought would be a right cross. Instead, I turned it into a half hook to the short ribs, and he had to call it a night. Nice little confidence booster to go along with the news that my fight is a go.

What kinda partner drills are you running?

With this regime, you'll be GOAT in NO time.

Just basic offense/defense stuff. One guy throws a named 3-4 punch combination and the other guy defends, and then throws his own combination. Back and forth type stuff.

Good work, dumbass

Enright is doing conditioning work now too.

Soon I will be better shape than you.
