Taking Beatings & Forgetting Names

Victory. Got matched up with another tall guy, but was able to be more effective this time. Gave him a standing 8 count in the 3rd, and won by a pretty wide margin. Thanks for the pep talks guys.

Awesome man! good to hear!

Get to use the shovel punches you were working on?

Thanks Free and Enright. Freeman - Didnt get to dig that left hook in as much as I wanted. Almost got the stoppage though, so I felt pretty satisfied with the results, if not the overall package. Still have a lot to work on.

Hope so! My friend taped 2 of the rounds, so just waiting to get them from her.

Shadow Boxing, Light Sparring

Fight at USF

Notes: 1st round, worked to get inside opponent's longer reach, and landed jabs and left hooks to head and body. Won the round. 2nd round, he was more aggressive, and that made it easier to counter. Knocked his mouthpiece out with an uppercut, and then he got a standing 8 count near the end of the round. 3rd round, he was ready to go, but couldnt finish it off. Ref stopped the fight for doctor to check on him, because he was a bit bloody. He was able to continue, and the fight went to a decision, which I won.

Good job Starvin'

Out of curiosity, how do you get in the pocket range against someone with a longer reach. I always get hit whenever I try to jab my way in. Thinking of doing a Hopkins and throwing a diving lead right hand to get in that range.

If you are fighting a taller guy, I think you kind of have to reconcile yourself with the fact that you will probably take some shots as you attempt to get inside.

Definitely, stepping with a good jab or double jab helps, and make sure that you are ready to throw as soon as you get where you want to be. I make that mistake sometimes. I throw a double jab, get into the range where I want to be, and then pause between that action and the next, which would be unloading a combination. That lets the guy reassert his range.

Not that it CANT work, but be careful with any kind of diving or reaching punches on a taller guy. He has more time to see it coming, and you could set yourself up to getting timed with hard counters. When I am successful, it is because I am jabbing my way inside, and then throwing head and body combinations together without a break in the action.

yeah, I step in with the jab and get hit with a left hook, then hes prety much out of there. Not at all a huge fan of stepping in with a 1-2, as it strips the speed and power away frrom the right hand. Doesnt help that I am completely flat footed either.

Head movement and angles work, but I fouind it best to be subtle when going in.

You look puzzled. Congrats on the fight!

That was supposed to be my "determined" look. Thanks mang.

You get hit with left hooks? Unless the guy has a really good one, I would just step with the jab and make sure to keep the right hand nice and tight to the right side of my face as I do so.

Another option is to throw the jab and make the step a little off to the left, to land a hook to the body after that jab. Going to the body changes elevation, and gets you under his hook upstairs.

I dont really like stepping with a jab/right hand either, but some people use it effectively. Head movement and angles should be a given, regardless of the actual tactic you use at any given time.

The left hooks usually land in my guard, but it stops me from getting where I want to be. I like the idea of jabbing and going to position for a left hook to the body, but never really tried it. Will make note of that.
