It's the same thing in Korea unfortunately. You see 5 year olds with blackbelts given out as participation awards. But it's a weird sport that as a very broad range of seriousness. You have mcdojos all the way up to Olympic athletes. A TKD blackbelt could be a weeb who's never done anything athletic in his life or he could an Olympian. What other martial art does that? Maybe the general umbrella of karate or kungfu?
A boxer or or muay thai guy even at the lowest level still knows how to scrap a bit.
I don't agree that that they can't punch , not alone to talk about kicks.
It depends from gym. Some does have heavy bags and high S/C requirements, are pressing to compete in tournaments even coloured belts etc. Some are ...so so.
BTW black belt in TKD is mando requirement to get allowed in some tournaments etc.
Instructors are with ranks higher than 1 st d black belt etc.
There ofc is big difference to get BB in Central/ Eastern Europe or in U.S ....
1. Term black belt alone doesn't makes sense in these areas at all.
2. Sense makes rankings, are you listed that had cups, medals, worked as instructors etc.
Cos they have xx death superpuper arts, even with 0 contact used where you might get xx belts....if $ on the table.
In europe TKD BB usually takes 4-8 years to get... it isn't high PR value or value for job market at all and if you are instructor you have higher rank than just 1 d black belt.
Karate too does have....different gyms....sorry for reality....gyms not dojo in reality.
Some does have high requirements for physical condition and these are problems for a lot of students. Some are just pushing air, some does have ketleballs and heavy bags in guym...not only boards. They are doing pull ups and push ups, jumping, running etc stuff... Some even are lifting weights, ofc not till oly weightlifters level.
Shotokan and TKD does have some flaws if to talk about their usage in KB for example under K-1 rules...
They not rare cases does have cross training in boxing ....if compete under KB rules.
Training they does have might be from air pushing and movements to get belt till reality that they are using more than 50% time for training for S/C type stuff and then they might make problems even without any " fighting technique " used.
Just cos really athletic, low fat, muscles etc.
