Movies SUPERMAN (Dragonlord's Review, post #1)

If you have seen SUPERMAN (2025), how would you rate it?

Critics love it, audiences love it, chuds hate it because "woke", zionists hate it because apparently there's a Netanyahu stand-in, the only thing holding me back from watching it is capeshit fatigue. Can anyone tell me if it throws those off us who are tired of superhero movies a bone?
I have lost basically all interest in Marvel at this point. I can't even be bothered to watch their movies when they come to Disney +. That said I loved Superman, breath of fresh air, it is proudly and unapologetically a comic book movie. Also, I am tired of woke crap in movies in general and I didn't see one thing I thought was woke,.

Ah, too bad. The right wing meltdown over "woke" was honestly one of the movie's biggest selling points to me, lol.

Still, I'll probably go ahead and go see it.

Ha it's worth a shot. Maybe you'll be able to come back and school me on the wokeness I missed. But I left the movie in a good mood and hopeful for some reason.

Preface by saying Synder / Henry Superman is by far my favorite adaptation and I'm forever bitter their vision with the Injustice and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War adaptation won't be happening. That said, Superfriends was a pretty good comic book movie. Gunn really has a knack for simple colorful comic book story telling. It appeals to a wider audience; it's innocuous and it's visually dynamic.

Just hate that it's cookie cutter story telling; the weakest version of Superman yet, ruined Bizzaro Superman, and his earth parents were so backwoods; but again that's my preference for the Darker Man of Steel plot lines.

6.5 / 10

I'm going to pitch a movie in which Non-Binary Captain America leads Antifa to take over the US. Red Skull is the hero. He kills Cap in single combat and becomes President. He personally leads an invasion of Iran, telling Netanyahu that,

"You remind me of someone very special. A great man I knew a long, long time ago". 😈

The movie ends on a shot of Mount Rushmore, with Red Skull added to it.

Mel Gibson would bite my hand off for a chance to direct this! ;)

So I watched this this morning. About 20 people including me at the showing.

There were some things I REALLY liked, some I REALLY didn't, and not too much in the middle.

The good:

Superman - I wasn't sure how I was going to take to the less serious tone with him, but I really think they nailed the best version of Superman since Reeves. I would say 90% of the scenes he was in hit - both serious and more "jokey". Even the "eyes up here" we'd seen in the previews and I didn't like, worked. Gunn didn't overdo it.

Krypto - I thought for sure going into this movie I was going to hate him. Nope, probably my favorite scenes involved him - minus the portal dimension (more on that later).

Lois - Killed it. Honestly the best Lois I've seen.

The action - Liked the majority of the fight scenes, but I do think the comedy was a bit overdone with them. Very GotG feeling to many of them, which didn't fit as well.

Lex - Minus some over the top moments I thought that he was done justice. A bit too maniacal maybe, but it worked.

Supergirl - I'm really looking forward to her movie. I think the tone set here will be a great fit for her solo movie.

The Bad:

The conflict between the two countries - Hated everything about it from the over the top "leader" to final battle done as a comedy bit. Villagers would have been lit up like a Christmas tree.

The portal dimension - So they just have a bunch of people in IKEA glass boxes. Ok then. Also, this rift splits open and then zippers right back up? Nah, not a fan.

Metamorpho - Really didn't like anything that had to do with his kid, and Metamorpho didn't feel right at all. Looked kinda cool though.

The Justice Gang - Horrible name, and the running gag about it was done MUCH better in Thunderbolts. Didn't like Guy Gardner at all, but then again I think he's the worst Lantern ever in comics so there's that. Hawkgirl looked way too small. Mr. Terrific - see below.

The inbetween:

CGI - Didn't hate it, but it did look a bit cartoonish (especially the giant monster).

Mr. Terrific - I think they went a bit too far into the comedic elements with him, but overall I really enjoyed how he was portrayed with one minor/major issue - he's one of the top 3 (?) smartest people on the planet and had too much trouble with various programs or things he should have easily been able to solve much faster.

I think they have built a pretty decent foundation for future films in the new DCU, but they do run the risk of turning into Marvel-like in tone. The big test will trying to expand on this universe without rushing everything and giving another BvS.

7.5 outta 10.

There were some negative reactions to some of the clips and previews but watching the movie as a whole, it worked when you know the entire context. Like the scene where an emotional Supes confronted Lex about the abducted Krypto. But those that have seen it, understood everything leading up to it (the final message from his parents, the public turning against him, his fortress ransacked, his robot servants destroyed and his dog missing).

One of my favorite moments in the film was when Clark told Lois he was surrendering to the authorities because he might get answers where Krypto is or at least be locked up together with Krypto. He admits to Lois, "Yeah, he's not even a very good [dog]. But he's out there alone.. and he's probably scared." That stirred something inside. (If you'll excuse me, I think there are some assholes chopping onions besides me)

Yeah I thought Nicholas did a good job as Luthor. I think him being over the top worked because he was polar opposite of what Superman was.

When that cop said, “take his bald headed ass to prison!” at the end, I nearly lost my shit hahaha

Honestly, I felt like it was a letdown.

The writing was poor, the plot was terrible, the characterizations were weak. Im kinda shocked its getting so much praise.

An example of what I mean by terrible writing. Luthor had literally zero plan when he breaks into the Fortress of Solitude. None. He had zero idea what he'd find. And he just happens to come across this e-mail from Krypton, the latter half of which not even Superman knows about, and somehow its this smoking gun to bring down Superman....but only because everyone in the movie is stupid and it just takes some 20 second commercial from Luthor to make the entire world go "Oh, that dude thats been saving everybody for 3 years? FUCK THAT GUY I HOPE HE DIES".

And even THAT was kind silly because it wasnt even necessary to make the Kryptonians send Superman to Earth to rule everybody and bang some sluts. Just have Luthor, Super Villain Genius, dupe up the video. Its ridiculous that all the coincidences have to align for his plan to work, which wasnt even a plan because he had no idea what he'd do once he got into the fortress.

Then theres Superman himself. Who is almost incapable of accomplishing anything for the majority of the movie. He gets beat up in the beginning and then somehow keeps getting beaten at every turn, until finally he beats Ultraman because only the dog could have destroyed the cameras? For some reason?

The movie is kind of a mess. All these parts and none of them work in tandem. I get that its sort of a love letter to DC fandom, but is it only successful at that level? Why would I care about Mr Terrific? hes kinda boring and has meh powers, but hes propped up like some sort of big deal that Im supposed to care about, and cheer when he has an action scene or says dumb shit like "Im goddamn Mr Terrific".

This isnt really a Superman movie. Its a Saturday morning episode of Super Friends with a 200 million dollar budget. I dunno. I dont mean that as an insult. Thats what it was. Maybe thats what some people wanted. But its just packed to the brim with all these ideas, but theyre basically half baked. Why is hawk Girl even in this movie? She accomplishes nothing, contributes nothing to the plot and makes annoying sounds.

And how is Nathan Fillion in the movie for less time than Mr Terrific? Is Mr Terriffic that popular? I dunno, is he?

So ultimately, I guess I see how if youre just a true DC fan, itll really resonate with you. I can see how people that said Man of Steel "wasnt what Superman should be" might think this is more what they wanted. Fair enough. Theres no accounting for taste, although Im sure theres plenty of Superman stories to go around.

I will say Im kinda looking forward to Supergirl. A superpowered drunken bitch teamed up with Lobo sounds pretty cool.

The movie sucked imo.

It was all over the place.

Too many nonsensical characters.

No solid plotline.

Cartoony.

I had no idea what it was trying to do or where it was seeking to go.

The fact that people were saying this is better then the dark knight is pure comedic gold. That was an actual movie with an actual plot, solid actors, a solid score and fleshed out characters you could feel.

I have no clue what this was.

Kids may like it. As a grown adult however, I cant give this more then a 5 and thats being generous.

Are people hurting for big budget blockbusters so much that even this kinda trash gets pumped up?

Perfectly said.

It totally felt like I was watching a Saturday morning cartoon come to life. Zero sense of direction. Zero character development. No rhyme or reason as to why some things are happening or why some characters are even introduced to begin with. It just felt like a jumbled, over saturated, poorly written mess.

The fact that people were comparing this to the dark knight absolutely amazes me now that ive seen it. This is one of the worst superhero films ive seen, not anywhere near the best, not even mid tier.

Covid era really fcked with people. No sense of taste at all.

This echoes a lot of how I felt about the movie.

Luthor had no plan for when he reached the Fortress, had no idea what was inside, so what was the play there?
I don't like how they just completely shit on Krypton and Superman's parents. The movie touched on certain things, but it was generally light, and it didn't really deep dive into any struggles he had with his humanity vs alienness, or his feelings about Krypton. They show him listening to a message of his birth parents at the beginning of the movie to show how important that message is to him.
All of that to just casually wipe it away by saying that his parents were basically no better than Zod.
This plot made the whole war plot and Superman's interference in that lose value. That should have been the plot and what Luthor should have been using to discredit Superman and drum up public and government fear/hate against him.

And there are a grand total of 2 Kryptonians, and somehow Lex and 30 other humans are able to translate Kryptonian? Lex was able to repair the broken message, but Superman's robots weren't?

In the very first Superman movie of this DC Universe, Luthor has already made a clone of Superman, infiltrated his fortress, and has access to world ending technology and black holes.
I felt this was too much for an introduction movie. Where does someone like Lex go from here?
If you already have the tech to create your own Superman (and he said his is stronger) that you can control, then how is it not game over?

The idea of him controlling his Superman like a game was interesting at first, but I got tired of it very quickly. In a real fight you wouldn't be able to call a fist fight like that in real time. How could you do that between 2 Supermen? They should be moving at speeds you wouldn't be able to catch with your eyes. Add to that, who was Superman fighting where you could study his fighting style long enough to prepare counter attacks/plans for him?

I also saw it as more of a Super Friends movie than a Super Man movie.

Well glad I'm putting my review in week 2 so I don't have to bother with Spoiler tags.

Leaning towards 8/10. Still trying to see how I feel in a few days

@Dragonlordxxxxx

Was concerned because it felt like Gunn was going to go in the Polar Opposite of Man of Steel , and while they feel like Movies from 2 completely different timelines Comparing the Two would feel tiresome. Years later though I disliked Man of Steel ( Let Pa Kent Die ) I'm more annoyed that Movie wasted Henry Cavil .

I liked Gunn , GOTG was a a great Trilogy but some of his Jokes didn't land with me and it was the same here.

What I liked

Hoult was great as Lex Luthor I think leaning into the Jealousy and Envy aspects was good , had enough does enough to be Compelling and Unlikable that , Krypto's. Hulk Loki Moment was satisfying.

Brosnahan is probably the Best Lois Lane in a Movie since Margot Kidder in Superman 1 and 2 .

Crowenswet did a very good Job as Superman for me. His back and forth with Lois in the Interview and him allowing her to pick holes in his mindset and also how torn up about the rest of the El Family's message worked because of him. I wasn't originally a fan of making the Kent's an as unremarkable as possible but it made the little Family montage at the end stand out that .

Mr Terrific was great not supporting Character with cool moments

Kind of over Gunn using his Muses in Movies , Fillion, his Brother.

What I didn't like

Quite Possibly the dumbest NPC/Civilian Characters in any comic book Movie , retards have no sense of self preservation, don't know if that was intentional by Gunn, but it's distracting to me.

Also could have used less quips

Anyways

Haven't seen any commercials or Press leading up to this since I don't watch much TV anymore so was surprised to see Milly Adcock as Supergirl in this movie, I know she was cast already but wasn't expecting her here and her the reason for Krypto being an asshole dog makes sense.

Also there is a reason why I stopped watch YouTube reviews , they just want shit to fail.

Overall I enjoyed it , but I don't think I would have been torn up if I actually waited to see this at home vice in the Theaters.

You're spot on with the Hulk-Loki moment comparison. They can't kill Lex and Supes can't physically beat him up since the optics would be bad, so giving him a well-deserved beatdown from a dog (which he tortured btw) was a satisfying comeuppance.

Yeah the Kents casting was unremarkable, most likely intentional. Ever since Smallville cast John Schneider and Annette O'Toole and Man of Steel cast Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, I think audiences have subconsciously come to expect big-named attractive older actors to play the Kents. Even on Marvel's side, they went with the hot Aunt May route with Marisa Tomei. And I'm pretty confident if there's a Spidey reboot in the future, Sony is going with a younger Aunt May instead of the traditional version.

I also observed that about your comment on the NPCs. I think Gunn intentionally did that to show that superheroes have existed for quite some time and some of the public have gotten used to the battles. Plus this was in Metropolis, so this might be Gunn saying that the city has built an acquired trust in Superman over the years. There are levels of realism in superhero movies. This movie is not supposed to have The Dark Knight level of realism. Because if you try to nitpick this movie, you're going to find a lot of holes.

Yup, the Krypto payoff at the end was great.

I really wished Gunn cast a proper actor for the Maxwell Lord role instead of Sean.

Glad you are taking a step back and recognizing specific YouTube channels that just constantly promote anger and hate.

Just watched it.

This my 2nd attempt actually. The first one was on Thursday evening but the fire alarm triggered 10 mins into the movie. After waiting outside for 40 mins we were told we couldn’t go back in so we all got free re-admit passes. My buddy actually asked for 4 instead of 2 so we each got an extra ticket.

Anyway finally got to watch and finish it and it was very very enjoyable. A very human Superman made for a very entertaining one. The spin on his parents message was kinda out of left field. Would be surprised if the final cleanup on the message showed that they told him “NOT to be a tyrant and do those bad things”.

Really enjoyed it. 9/10.

I ended up watching it again with my son as I had to take my daughter to the theatre for a date anyways and he said he wanted to see it. He's 12 and for what's it's worth he said it might be the best movie he's ever seen. I'm sure that won't stick but I was surprised I thought he looked kind of bored during it.

Yeah I figured we agree on a lot. Also on Maxwell Lord it's funny how DC/WB has fumbled that casting Pascal was miscast as Lord and Sean Gunn can't carry that Character the way it needs to be done.

My solution, Sean Gunn's Character has been a fake all along and Lord makes the decisions from behind the scenes played by a Better and More Charismatic Actor. I can only dream
