Strength training for the puny

You make beer?! You bend, powerlift, tear tennisballs, play rugby, do judo, own cats, mod on sherdog and make beer?! HOly shit dude what dont you do? But seriously making beer is awesome. I tried to convince my parents to let me try when I was in 14...but they said no. :icon_cry2

Maybe someone can answer while its kinds on the same topic: I just got glucosamine/ msm. It says 1500 mg a day on the bottle, is that enough? Also, I've heard that it takes several months before glucosamine really starts to relieve joint stiffness and is more of a long term supplement.

He's not a lumberjack, so Smashius hasn't reached the pinnacle of manliness yet.

I have taken down a few trees though, I just don't have the flannel shirt.

Beer is brewing nicely, room temp is near perfect about now so it's running along at a fast pace. Brewing beer is highly satisfying, there's something about being able to sit down with a pint of beer you brewed yourself that gives you a real sense of accomplishment. The quicker ones amongst you may have noticed that this brew will be ready at almost exactly the same time as the rugby world cup kicks off, this was no accident. Nor is the fact I can see the tv from where the beer barrel is, no need to wait for a break in the action to fetch more alcohol.

In other news i saw the doc again today, for some reason, I had to go and show him the aspiration didn't take and then get the letter to the surgery department sent off, why I couldn't just tell him over the phone i don't know. Anyway should have a surgery date fairly soon.

I should also be trying to get to the nearby bjj place tomorrow and I'll be looking for a gym and PL comps in my area.

Some light bending and levering, nothing much, got a jammed index finger on the right hand, wasn't really feeling inspired.

Was it you that recently made parrallettes? If so, what is the dimension from the floor to the top of the handle? I made some over the weekend (haven't glued them together yet) and they seem a bit tallish.

If it wasn't you that made parrallettes, then what kind of beer are you brewing?

10ish, I think. How do you like yours? Would you have done anything different?

Not really, they're stable as I need them to be, don't need anything taller unless I was starting to do moves that can only be done on real parallel bars and they're long enough to allow me to fuck about with hand position, but not long enough that they flex excessively.

Okay so I went to go try out my local martial arts place in one of their bjj sessions, unfortunately the 5 mile bike ride turned into about 15 miles when google maps decided that what is actually a rather large roundabout on the ground should be represented by a straight on in their map. Eventually managed to get there 50 minutes late, tired as all hell and decided that rather than strolling in the better part of an hour late and looking like a douche, i'd be better served to turn round and go home while the orute is fresh in my mind and that way make sure I'm more likely to make it in time on thursday.

So 2 hours cycling was yesterdays training, tomorrow i'm going to try again. Today will be some lighht grip training and maybe some BW bullshit.

Yesterday I went to th bjj class for the first time. Training was exactly as should be expected, same warm up as every grappling class on earth followed by some technique work and then sparring. Nice to train with people who have a completly different style to what I'm used to. Unfortunately I haven't been grappling in way too long and that peculiar type of muscluar endurance that only seem to be developd by regular rolling wasn't anywhere to be seen, so I gassed pretty quickly. I'm also way out of practice and felt off balance and slow, nothing a few sessions won't cure me of. As always with taking a break from grappling I'm sore as hell today.

Yesterday I made an attempt at a bastard DU bend, failed and was thoroughly demoralised, then yesterday evening I knocked the failed bastard across my desk and realised that it was 'bobbling' slightly. I can't even see it by eye but I kinked it, I fucking kinked it.

Couldn't be happier, that thing's going down.

Got a possible new gym, will probably go and take a lookk tomorrow. Looked at one yesterday, was utter crap, no squat or power rack and nowhere to deadlift.

where are you now? why did you move?

I've moved to Sutton, it's basically a south-western outlying borough of London. I had to move because my family moved down here, I'm stuck with them until I join the Army (which is put off until I've had my wrist surgery), currently looking for a job to fill the time.

After half a dozen failed attempts to find a new gym (typical meeting with gym staff: ME - 'Hi, I'm interested in training here, do you have a squat rack?', GYMTARD - 'sure, I'll give you a tour of our gym... here's our squat rack', ME - 'That's a smith machine', *struggles to control urge to throw GYMTARD through window**) I finally hit paydirt yesterday.

Amazingly enough 'Pinks gym' isn't a gay gym, but a bodybuilding gym (yes, there is a difference), on phoning up and asking if I could squat and deadlift I was told 'we're a gym, not a health club'. There's a small room of cardio kit away from the main area, but there's no pool, no yoga classes and no pink DBs. What there is, is three interconnected rooms of freeweights and machines, plenty of benches, DBs up to 70kg and two squat racks with adjustable safety pin height.

I had a 'fitness assessment' which basically involved me chatting to one of the trainers about creatine supplementation and powerlifting and then they let me get on with training. My acid test was deadlifting (unfortunately I have to stand inside one of the squat rack as there's nowhere else with enough room), bult up to some heavy singles and no-one cared, was left alone. Okay, so there's quite a few machines (actually I've alway fancied playing about on a leg-press and it'll probably be a big help while my wrist's in a cast) and there's mirrors on the walls, but it's miles better than anything else I could find and I can train properly there.

New gym workout

Dips:
Proper dip station, with thick handles, wil look forward to this when I remember my dip belt

Squats:
50 (110) x3
70 (132) x3
90 (198) x3
110 (242) x3
Deadlifts:
65 (143) x3
85 (187) x3
105 (231) x3
120 (264) x3
150 (330)
170 (375)
190 (419)
Not bad, built up to 90% of old max, wearing wrong shoes, no chalk and after a month and a half without training.

Cable rows (parallel grip):
30 (66) x8
50 (110) x8
70 (154) x5x5
Fuck off, felt like playing with a new toy, was actually wuite a nice movement and felt a lot like a normal BOR only my form was a lot more solid.

Need to buy myself some chlak before I do another pull workout, gym guy siad I should be alright using chalk as long as i'm tidy. Was a light workout, but I was off from lifting heavy for far too long and needed to ease back in. Lots of DOMs today.

Its funny you guys mentioned paralletes, I bought all the stuff to make mine today but got the wrong elbows (stypidly). I go back tomorrow to get the correct elbows and get started.
