It wouldn't have done so even if it were considered across the board stellar. TFA was Joe-Rogan-Once-in-a-lifetime type shit in terms of following up the much-loved OT with a direct sequel which no one thought was ever going to happen. That was the perfect storm of hype- thirty year gap and you had a movie being made with the original stars.
The big test will be to see how the follow up to the Last Jedi does. Because, honestly, if there is not significant audience erosion, at least domestically, I'd be pretty surprised. And I liked TLJ, it's just clear that there are enough people who disliked it that likely may not even come back for the third film.
Also, there's less incentive, what with Fisher, Ford, and Hamill gone and the basic conflict being one of similar threat and stakes to the OT. Been there, done that.
