Max didn’t want to put the belt on the line. Then Topuria wanted to throw down at the start of the fight and Max declined. This is extremely un-BMF behavior. If you’re willing to invite someone half blind from eye pokes and with a broken nose to bang, but you won’t bang with someone on equal footing, that isn’t BMF.
If Max had thrown caution to the wind and gotten KO’d 30 seconds in, he’d still be considered a BMF. But the way it went, he should probably be asked to vacate the title.
