PC Sherdog PC Build/Buy Thread, v6: My Power Supply Burned Down My House

Pc gaming will always follow a constant. Components like the RAM, motherboard, CPU and GPU will inevitably be replaced. Spending more money on peripheral hardware is the better purchase.

Unless you are driving a 4K display or utilizing a 500+hz monitor. 5090 purchase doesnt make sense.
So skimp out on the CPU, GPU, RAM, and motherboard...the most important components to gaming performance. And a 5090 is a total waste outside 4K & >500Hz even though there is already dozens of games out now that even the mighty 5090 won't come close to maxing out at the optimal graphic settings (much less the max settings) with a 1440p 240Hz monitor. If it's maxed, take Borderlands 4, and no, not even DLSS magic is gonna ramp this up to 240fps:

Meanwhile, this wasn't what he asked you. He asked you what CPU cooler is going to be so much better than the one you disparaged.

It makes no sense to splurge on a keyboard or mouse more than your GPU.

Actuation keyboard and a optical switch mouse will cost around $350 total. Whose operational use will extend past a major hardware component like a GPU.

And that's $200 you could put toward core components in a PC that will significantly improve the gaming experience. I can't tell if your bad advice is because you've already splurged and have the set up you want or you're just out of touch with what the PC gaming player base is these days. IE, for prebuilds, you're talking enough money to go from a 5060 to a 5070 if you catch the right sale.

We are talking about someone purchasing a 5090 and a 9800X3D to play a game released in 2018. Comparing two top end peripheral purchase prices between a 5060 or 5070 cost isnt in the same ballpark of what was excessively spent.

To which I refer to said poster saying he wants a 5090 lol. I don't think there's any talking him out of it, so might as well give him the advise he wants, no?

Im not going to massage his ego, or half ass in assistance like others offered. He needs to know the truth. Otherwise he'll see with GTA6's Pc port.

A mechanical keyboard and an optical mouse are gonna run you $350?

You can get a mechanical keyboard with replaceable keys and an optical mouse with a flawless sensor for under $150.

*Edit* I'm actually being far too generous. Currently, the bestselling mechanical keyboard on Amazon with swappable switches is $30, and the bestselling gaming mouse (that has a flawless optical sensor) is also $30. So it's $60. Our resident village idiot overshot it by at least $290/580%.

I don't think you're in any danger of massaging my ego. But you're often so incredibly vague and elusive. My last cooler which was very high end, isn't compatible with this CPU/Mobo. My mouse and Keyboard are indeed high end.

I didn't get an RTX 5090 to play a game from 2018. I got an RTX 5090 because my GPU died, and I want to be able to run games at the best settings with the best performance. @avenue94 said to just give me the advice I want, but I don't think at any point I've shown myself to be obstinate or unwilling to be persuaded. Is the 5090 not better than the 5080? Or if it's not better for ME and my goals then please, make a case. I came here asking for advice from you all, under the presumption that I know very little, and that you all know more than me. And that's not fake humility, I believe it to be true. And any time you give me some snide comment I just roll with it and ask you to clarify, to help me. Unless you either have 1) English as a second language or 2) some sort of personal beef with me and just like to chuckle to yourself as I stumble around here I have a difficult time understanding why you give me such opaque feedback.

If it's the former, then I humbly ask you to be patient with me and help me understand what you're telling me. If it's the latter I honestly don't remember us having any noticeably unpleasant encounters. Also Cyberpunk was 2020, not 2018 man.

So tell me in terms of gaming, seriously what is your issue with what I have here? Help me understand. You know more than I do and I'm not being sarcastic. Are we talking bottlenecks? Waste of money relative to performance? I remember you mentioned the cable issue but as far as I know that has been addressed, or would be replaced if it occurred. Is that correct? Again what's the issue with the cooler?

You say I need to hear the truth but you're not communicating the truth to me in a useful way. If you don't care to do that, then let me know. Otherwise I'd like you to just clarify for me.

Okay so what's the deal with GTA 6? It's not going to run it well?

You need to get yourself a 5070ti and take all that remaining money you would've spent on the 5090 and get yourself some nice enthusiastic grade keyboard with pre-lubed switches and springs, sound dampening foam and some thick keycaps so you can get that nice thocky sound. Forget about all the mainstream switches, get yourself some expensive Gateron Box Ink V2 just to be fancy. Then for the mouse, get yourself the Razer Basilisk V3 Pro 35K Phantom edition, because why the fuck not, check it out it's green and transparent that's some sexy shit right there.

Flaming or Trolling
Okay so what's the deal with GTA 6? It's not going to run it well?

History dictates it wont. Modern GTA is a console exclusive title with bad Pc ports. Brute forcing to acceptable Pc performance levels comes years down the line when newly released hardware obtains it.

Unless your main games are similar to League of Legends or Runescape. Main hardware component value isnt there. For those two game titles previously list are intentionally designed to run on decade plus old hardware to increase potential users in low income houses and developing countries.

We dont even know what your monitor/display specs are. While youve been cagey on what game titles will be played. Ive already given you two case option. First being impractical while the other is practical. Information youve supplied doesnt even warrant a suggestion on other components.

Dude what the fuck are you doing in these threads? Honestly. This has got to be some shit tier trolling.

Lets all convince a poster to buy the fastest production car in the world for rush hour traffic usage. Especially from a person who left breadcrumbs that its a semi-risky purchase for them and cant troubleshoot their current system failure.

At minimum $1,400 can be saved or repurposed to other components thatll result in near identical performance and in some cases a better experience.

It's not my intent to be cagey. I want to play Cyberpunk maxxed out. Pathtracing and everything. I wasn't able to do that and keep above 60 fps on the 3080 Ti and since they updated it the card didn't even have the tech for it. I would like to have GTA VI, as well as NTE and Witcher 4. I have 4k monitors, I could be remembering wrong but I thought you were in that discussion about a year ago.

Help me with my current GPU then. I opened a ticket for Gigabyte, I don't know what they will say. Again I do want to salvage the old rig because someone else will be playing it.

He can't reply to you, not that he sincerely would if he could. He's on timeout.

@Madmick and anyone wondering what happened with the 3080 Ti:

It'd been doing a couple weird things leading up to the bricking. I was playing Alien Isolation of all things when suddenly the video went black and the fans started going crazy. This had happened once before, a while ago on Diablo IV. I had capped the frames at 239 on the NVidia control panel and hadn't experienced any issues since. Both times it happened, I immediately shut down the computer and gave it a couple minutes before trying again. When I checked the Control Panel this time I saw that during one of the updates the max frame rate must have been set to default, which is none. So I set it back to 239 once more and figured I was fine.

But after the last time that happened, maybe two or three weeks ago, I would on very rare occasion get black video again. Sometimes while playing a game, sometimes just watching YouTube. All three times it happened I was using Discord and I figured there was some sort of driver issue so I uninstalled and reinstalled Discord. I also disabled the 3D acceleration function in it, wasn't having any issues after. Played Red Dead Redemption 2 with no issues at all.

A couple times I did notice that when I'd boot up Windows, the "login" screen, that shows a random background picture, would begin with a blue tint before correcting to the proper tone.

Then finally last week I was playing Isolation again, and suddenly I got to what I believe was the same place I'd gotten the last time I'd crashed. Black video. Restarted and nothing. All the lights and fans going I believe but a video trouble indicator on the Mobo. It was then that I knew I was fucked

Is this GTA thing true? I have an acer nitro laptop from 2015 that runs GTA better than my one

I'm showing a $6 coupon for the keyboard. $24 for a hot swap keyboard?! What a deal.

You sound like you know what you're talking about. I've got Gateron G Pro V3 yellows, but they're a touch too sensitive. I like everything else about the switches. The travel distance, sound etc.
Got any recommendations? My board is 3 and 5 pin compatible.

I'm partial to linear switches myself. I used Cherry SIlent Reds for a long time until I tried Gateron Silent Reds (5 pin), found the cherry silent reds to be too harsh/sratchy sounding in comparison. I do have the MX Speeds (3 pin) switches and actually use them for the WASD, space bar, backspace, enter and shift and the Gateron Silent Reds for everything else. So my keyboard is a Frankenstein mix of those two. I also have the Gateron Pro V3 Reds but found them to bee a bit too loud. They were very smooth though.

I also have the Akko CS Wine Red Switches and Akko CS Crystal and they were fine but I didn't like the sound.
