PC Sherdog PC Build/Buy Thread, v6: My Power Supply Burned Down My House

Thanks, I'll pick some of those wires up. Need to make sure I find the right ones on Amazon.

Ok, I may have spoke too soon. Windows worked through the motherboard while the GPU was in the PC. I was able to download the drivers...kind of. The system said they were downloaded and when I went to the NVIDIA hub to look at the system, it kept telling me I needed to install the drivers. I reset my computer and it didn't boot right into windows, I had to restart it a few times. Once it worked, I installed the drivers again and the same thing happened. Needless to say, nothing came out of the GPU, it was all motherboard.

What a shitshow this is lol. I already put in a ticket with CyberPower. It honestly sounds like it could be several things (shipping, the actual card, the power supply etc). They have a solid warranty so hopefully they'll just ship me another 5080 and I can send this one back. I don't want to ship the entire PC out.
If they don't take care of you they will never again get a recommendation from me on this website. I'll straight up ghost them from every thread.

Sucks that you're having such a hard time with this purchase. I'm like 99% convinced at this point that its the GPU that's no good. Hoping CyberPower doesn't give you shit and just sends you a replacement card with a return label to send back the defective one.

Received my PC yesterday. Beautiful machine, however, I got the 5080 grey screen of death. Absolutely nothing loads. I can get into the BIOS thought the motherboard HDMI but that doesn’t do me any good. Been struggling to figure out why. So far, this is what I’ve done:

System Troubleshooting Summary – April 19, 2025

PC & GPU Details:
  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming OC
  • Motherboard: MSI PRO B850-P WiFi
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 (2x16GB)
  • Storage: Dual 2TB NVMe SSDs (4TB total)
  • Power Supply: 1000W 80+ Gold Modular PSU
  • Display Output: HDMI only
  • OS: Attempting clean Windows 11 install (build 24H2)
Visual/Hardware Checks
  • GPU is securely seated in PCIe x16 slot
  • 12V-2x6 power cable is fully inserted (no signs of partial engagement)
  • No blinking LEDs or warning indicators on GPU (per Gigabyte’s diagnostic LED system)
  • RGB/branding on GPU is illuminated, confirming at least standby power
  • PSU switch is in the ON position, cable tested and reinserted
  • Verified all PSU modular cables are seated correctly
  • Verified CPU cooler, case fans, and GPU fans power on
Display Troubleshooting
  • Tested with multiple HDMI cables
  • Tried multiple monitors (including a BenQ)
  • Plugged directly into:
    • Motherboard HDMI (iGPU)
    • GPU HDMI port
  • Only output received was via motherboard HDMI
  • No display from GPU, even though it is powered
BIOS & Firmware
  • Entered BIOS successfully (MSI Click BIOS X)
  • Enabled PEG as primary graphics adapter
  • Set Graphics Card Detection to “Enabled”
  • Verified PCIe settings (PCIe Gen Auto → PCIe Gen 4)
  • Re-checked Resize BAR and Secure Boot options
  • Memory, CPU, and SSDs are detected properly
  • BIOS is latest version as of March 13, 2025
Operating System Attempts
  • Used Windows 11 Media Creation Tool and Rufus (twice):
    • Created bootable USB with GPT + UEFI (non-CSM) config
    • Used official Windows 11 24H2 ISO

  • Attempted to install to clean unallocated drive space
  • Got repeated “Windows 11 installation has failed” errors
  • Also encountered error: “Windows cannot complete installation in Safe Mode”
  • Switched USB ports (2.0 and 3.0) during testing
  • Verified drives were GPT with diskpart (Disk 0 and Disk 1 both clean and GPT)
  • Tried diskpart cleaning and formatting steps multiple times
Safe Mode & Recovery Tests
  • Able to boot into BIOS and Windows Recovery
  • Occasionally hit grey screen or hang after MSI splash screen
  • Reached Advanced Options → Command Prompt
  • Attempted to manually run setup.exe from installation media
  • Boot menu showed two partitions for USB, tried both
  • Installation failed repeatedly near completion
Conclusion So Far
  • All hardware appears powered
  • GPU lights up, shows no diagnostic faults
  • Windows 11 installation persistently fails even with multiple rebuilds of the USB
  • System sometimes defaults to BIOS or hangs on splash/loading
  • No POST or output ever seen from GPU HDMI port
  • iGPU works temporarily but leads to Safe Mode loops or failed boots

Hate to be this guy, but you plug you're plugging your HDMI cable into the graphics card when you have it installed, correct?

Yeah, he tried both. Only gets output from the iGPU. System won't even boot properly with the GPU installed, definitely looks like a dead card.

I can get into the BIOS thought the motherboard HDMI but that doesn’t do me any good. Been struggling to figure out why. So far, this is what I’ve done:

Try having only one M.2 installed on a PCIe 4.0 slot with the GPU installed and HDMI going from GPU to Monitor.

Only other thing to check is that the PSU connectors from the PSU are correct and fastened.

Their ordering process and customer service have been straightforward so far. On their support page, they provide a form to request a replacement GPU for defects, though I opted instead to submit a support ticket directly. In that ticket, I detailed all the troubleshooting steps I've taken based on recommendations here and others I found online. Hopefully, this will help expedite things if they have extra 5080s available, as I've tried nearly every troubleshooting approach except using the power connector suggested by @JBSchroeds.

If I had to guess, I'd say the issue is likely either a faulty power connector or damage caused by the GPU becoming dislodged from the PCIe slot during transit.

Thanks for all of the help, I really appreciate it. The silver lining is, I got to learn a few things from doing this. From hardware work to BIOS to USB OS loading etc. Thing's I've never done before, so it was an experience to say the least ha. My wife kept popping in and asking how it was going before finally telling me to just send it back. I've probably spent close to 8-10 hours working on this while the kids were terrorizing her.

CyberPower is sending a replacement 5080, which is great.

Since the system was able to partially detect the 5080 when installed in the secondary PCIe slot, does that indicate the primary PCIe slot is still operational?

Good to hear that they're not giving you shit about it.

I would guess that the MOBO is fine and you just got lucky that one time with it booting in the second slot. It's also possible that the slower speeds of the second slot meant the borked card was somewhat more stable but still broken. If the slot was dead, rather than the GPU being broken, then it should have installed and run fine in the second slot, just at the reduced speeds. The fact that things still weren't running/installing correctly in the second slot means its likely just the GPU at fault.

Thanks. They're putting a hold on my card until the GPU is received, but that's manageable. I think having written all of my troubleshooting activities down probably helped expedite it.

This was their response:
"I'm not sure if you have heard about the NVIDIA drivers causing the black/grey screens? If you haven't, here is a quick video explaining those issues: Nvidia Black Screen Display Port Problems. Seeing that you have already reinstalled Windows and the issues persist, it sounds like it can be a hardware issue, as you mentioned."

That helps clarify things for me. Initially, when the GPU was partially detected in the second slot, I started to worry that it might be the primary PCIe slot itself. But your explanation makes sense, especially regarding the slower speeds possibly masking some of the card's issues.

I'll give both of those a shot. I'm planning on installing the NVIDIA drivers after I remove the GPU again.

I did come across this video and I've read of other people having success switching power chords. Basically, the cable that comes with it could be defective or not giving the GPU enough power. It sounds like he has the same issue and he used the 12VHPWR cable and it worked for him.

Jesus. Wtf is wrong with nvidia and power cables these past two generations

Just overall shitshow of a generation due to cut corners and blown deadlines. To give an idea of how behind Nvidia was, they got out game ready drivers to notebook manufactures about a week and a half before launch last month.

Finally got the 5080 in. Set it up, plugged it in and of course....black screen. I almost had a heart attack. Plugged in the HDMI to the moba, entered BIOS and changed the PCIe to auto from Gen4 and boom it works.

Smooth as butter. Thanks again everyone.

We all know that feeling. Holy shit, the anxiety these things can induce.

Nice to know CyberpowerPC came through. Good for them.

Despite some of the unfavorable reviews I’ve seen online, they were really easy to work with. I’d have no problem going back to them for something else.

Surprisingly their return rates are also in line with the other big players despite skipping most of the diagnostics so they can have prebuilds immediately after launch day.

That's pretty impressive and really speaks to their build quality. I’m really happy with how my setup turned out, but I should have measured my case more carefully, it doesn’t fit where I wanted it to go.

Any thoughts on this?

I do love the handles for lugging around such a heavy PC if you're a LAN gamer, or just whatever reason, and I especially love that the nowhere on the top of the PC is a level surface meaning that no derpwizard at one of those parties tries to rest their beer on top of it. Bravo to that.

It looks like you can remove those solid front plastic parts with the Eagle logo for aesthetics so there is better front panel airflow. Nice option. The tool-less design is always welcome. You'll be able to assess for yourself what the difference in temps are with some stress tests.

But even if MSRP's for that CPU/GPU aren't realistic on today's market it's still difficult to swallow what is essentially a +$2K premium over MSRP for a prebuilt on "sale".
