Hideo on innovative game design thoughts from his radio podcast KOJI10:

Kojima is no stranger to gameplay mechanics that make use of your console or PC’s internal clock as a timer.

He starts out by mentioning two examples from 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on the PS2. To add to the realism of surviving in the jungle, the fresh food you had acquired would go off after a few days had passed in real life. Eating rotten food could make Snake violently sick, or you could turn spoiled food into a novel weapon by throwing it at hungry enemy soldiers.

Kojima also made use of the system clock for MGS3’s cat-and-mouse boss battle against elderly sniper The End. “Although he is a really tough boss, if the player waits a week, The End will die of old age,” recalls Kojima. Indeed, if the player loads their in-battle save at least one week later, they will be treated to a cutscene in which Snake discovers that The End is dead.

“I’ve thought about having characters’ hair grow in games,” Kojima reveals. “Originally in Death Stranding 2, I was going to have Sam’s beard gradually grow out over time, and the player would have to shave it. If they didn’t, Sam would end up looking unkempt,” he explains. “However, as Norman Reedus is a big star, I didn’t want to make him look uncool!” Despite this, the director says it is still something he might add to another game one day.

Kojima also comes up with three game concepts that have the passing of time in real life as a major mechanic. The first is a kind of game of life: “It starts out with the player being born, you’re a child and then gradually over time you become an adult. In the game, you fight various enemies. Like with the previous example (MGS3’s The End), if you keep playing the game, you will become a 70 or 80 year old man. However, at this age you will be weaker, your eyesight will worsen. When you are a teenager you’ll be able to run faster but by the time you reach 60 you’ll slow down a bit,” Kojima explains...

Elden Ring is getting a film adaptation. Civil War’s Alex Garland set to direct.

How to tell GRRM and Miyazaki’s story in film has fans concerned; a concern shared among dawgs, I’m sure. High-budget CGI is going to be a must, too – not an area to cheap out on.

Seriously? Gal Gadot?

For shame.

Something tells me the fact Cliffhanger Studios was run by an admitted extremist racist had something to do with this.

So I got the following email from Epic concerning the surprise smash hit Dark & Darker:
Epic Games said:
We removed Dark and Darker from sale on the Epic Games Store on March 5 in consideration of a court decision in Korea between Nexon and the game's publisher, IRONMACE. On November 1, 2025, we will be removing Dark and Darker from your library, at which point it will no longer be playable via the Epic Games Store.

Effective immediately, players can no longer purchase Redstone Shards or the Legendary Status upgrades via the Epic Games Store. Players can continue to use the Redstone Shards that they have previously purchased until November 1, 2025.

We will issue a refund to all players who have purchased the Legendary Status upgrade. Refunds will be issued to the player’s original payment method, and where that’s not possible, players will receive a refund to their Epic account balance. We are unable to provide refunds on Redstone Shards.

If you have not received a refund by July 1, please contact player support.

Thank you,
The Epic Games Store team

This has been a long time in the making. You'll recall:

So here's a weird entry. This game is trending on Twitch probably due to headlines about how the police raided the South Korean developer Ironmace's headquarters stemming from accusations by publishing giant Nexon that Ironmace stole staff and IP from them. Steam de-listed the game, and in response, Ironmace invited players to torrent their game (in its alpha state) instead. That's what people are watching on Twitch. Now those torrents are being aggressively targeted with DMCA claims. Also interesting, it's a battle royale game, but the twist is it's a dungeon crawler RPG. AFAIK that's a first.

Despite what you see there from years ago, it ultimately was put back on Steam, and I haven't gotten anything from them yet notifying me they intend to take it down, but then, despite that it's free, I have never claimed it there since I don't play it. I noticed that it implemented a ton of blood pressure-raising monetization tactics in their patches that have been yielding an increasingly negative backlash from Steam gamers. They're down to 27% positive for the most recent 30 days. Players are just shitting on them.

Nevertheless, the game is still maintaining a respectable playerbase and viewerbase. It's floating just outside the Top 100 most watched games on Twitch (and that includes stuff like IRL) alongside Baldur's Gate III and the most recent Oblivion Remastered release, for context, and it's averaging around 4K concurrent peaks daily which is keeping it in the Top 200 on Steam.

I must admit I'm a bit confused. I was curious what the recent court ruling was, but it appears nothing new was decided in a South Korean court since way back in February when it was ruled Ironmace did steal trade secrets, but didn't violate copyright IP.

Strange.
