Sean O'Malley is NOT a Star.

I think O'Malley is a star, but he needs a big rivalry to really build some narrative hype behind him. The great champions were built off great rivalries, Silva with Sonnen, Khabib with Conor, GSP with Penn, Jones and Cormier, Fedor and Nog/Mirko, Ronda with Meisha, Wanderlei and Rampage, Tito and Chuck...

And there's also the issue that the Sphere event is insanely pricey, and running on the same day Canelo is fighting.

I don't think he gets past Merab and/or Umar though...
 
Historically the lighter weight classes have not moved the needle on PPV buys.

O'Malley has not bucked that trend whatsoever

So funny observation about O’Malley. The UFC did a such a good job in promoting this kid that he’s really never carried a card based on his name value.

Right around the Mountinho fight where he got that push, they have been specifically attaching his name to big cards to try and garner eyes to him. Cards like Conor/Dustin 3, Adesanya cards, and big cards with two title fights.

So the last two cards he’s had to headline himself, a double title fight with Weili, with the gimmick of Boston and the plastic paddy crowd because his names O’Malley. And here’s the fun part, he was the CHALLENGER not even the champ. A lot of favoritism?

The next was a Miami card where they stacked that thing top to bottom, why? Because it was UFC 299. Essentially one giant advertisement for fans to buy UFC 300. Hell Dustin Poirier was Co-Main. O’Malley had benefit of placement.

Now they’ve got him headlining a card based around Mexican Independence Day on UFC noche while the Mexican champion is co-headlining in a double title fight card, at the gimmickiest of gimmmicky arenas.

I don’t think this kid is pulling the numbers by himself like a real star Ala Conor or Ronda like the UFC would have us believe.

What's your criteria for being a star?

And did the UFC say O'Malley is on Conor and Ronda's level? Or what makes you say the ufc would "Have us believe" that? Keep in mind the UFC over hypes everything. That's kind of their job as a promoter I guess.

But if he wasn’t a star how else would he have got a #1 contender fight by fouling his opponent in a fight he was losing?

Forgot about him? No. Care less about him to the point O'Malley is now bigger? Probably. The fight game is harsh like that.

Plus it's not just one fight. It's this fight coming off an embarrassing performance against Strickland.
