Sean O'Malley is NOT a Star.

Sean O'Malley is not a big star and can't carry UFC 306 by himself. As we already know ticket sells are abysmal and the UFC stands to lose big on this event.

UFC 292, Sterling vs O'Malley
UFC 299, O'Malley vs Vera 2
First, if you remember Aljo mentioned that he was shocked at how bad 292 sold. Also Dana never mentioned ppv numbers for these two events neither. This tells you everything you need to know imo. He'd be the first one to brag if they did anything worth while.

I personally feel that the UFC over estimated O'Malley's star power and they're gonna lose big on this event imo.

O'Malley isn't a star but he's very popular. He's in the MMA world a household name for sure. He's not a Jon Jones or Khabib type name but he's a bigger draw than Dricus, Belal, Topuria or Pantoja. It's debatable with Poatan and Islam I guess. He's also younger than almost everyone I just named and has an exciting style. I dont think he's ever had an opponent, buildup, presser, incident etc. To help get him over yet but I feel like if he gets through Merab impressively, Sean vs Umar will be a big deal.

Stars need a supporting cast. He needed two or three large names on the card to take the card from C to B+ or A-

He's a star not a superstar. I know Sphere is main drawing point for what this card is gonna do but O Malley is gonna headline UFC"s biggest gate of all time. Again I know thats not directly on him and its more sphere but he just did 14 mill gate in Miami and and this is gonna be UFC"s first 20 mill gate.

Enjoy the fights. I think this event will be awesome even if the UFC loses money on it.

Aljo's eyes -- his brain was closing the drapes before the missile hit. <lol>

same thing happend here

I've said this before but part of what made young Conor a star, is that men liked his style and wanted to look and dress like him. There were tons of guys rocking his haircuts and his fitted suits and polos.

O'Malley's look is too off-putting for people who don't listen to Tekashi 6ix9ine

Conor also said some cool stuff about being smart, loyalty etc. he was funny and had wicked comebacks! Conor has good fashion style that is sophisticated and classy for all ages.

Sean is cool but his style is too teenager and his lifestyle isn’t one that most people want (the wife swapping stuff)

For whatever reason when they added up the cost of this event, they decided “oh fuck we spent way too much better cheap out on the fights”, and I just don’t see how that makes any fucking sense whatsoever. They deserve to lose big money for being so tone-deaf.

Gotta agree. I have nothing against Sean and like him as a fighter but he wouldn't be in my top 10 "must see/favourite" fighters. No personality to speak of either. Maybe he does big twitch/tik tok numbers....

The UFC keeps on telling me that he's a superstar though

I think O Malley has star potential. That doesn't mean he's a star yet though.

People still aren't really sold on him, he's had a close decision against Yan, proving he's legit, but still, not necessarily head and shoulders above the rest of the division.

Great win over Aljo, then a win over Chito. He looked great against Chito and it was probably important to run that one back for the sake of fixing the only loss on his record sooner than later.

But, he really hasn't been around long enough to have genuine star power, that takes time to build.

I don't think stardom is like Conor, where you're just an instant hit, especially when you aren't some charismatic, shit talking god.

A lot of guys that became big draws took time to get to that level. It doesn't just happen over night. Even GSP, Jones, Chuck, Hughes, etc.

The potential is there though, the UFC has the metrics, trajectory of numbers and all that stuff, and they believe in his potential enough to have him on the first sphere card.

Presumably, this is the type of event that can truly propel someone into stardom, so, they're putting some cards down on OMalley to utilize that slot and gain some traction.

I think he needs some bigger wins / fights to really be on the level, something that truly places him ahead of the division, the Merab fight could very well be it, but only time will tell.

Sean does have a great style, but you need more than pink hair and fighting ability to be a star.

Yes, good promotion and also it would help if the UFC didn't outprice their own tickets to the masses.

Sean not being able to carry 306 is also largely due to the UFC just fucking up the management of 306. Dana is basically saying I know the card doesn't look like much, but trust me bro we have an awesome surprise that will make everything great! Please give me all of your money!!
<{hughesimpress}> (Where is the Dom SMH emoji?)

Also, Aljo saying he was shocked was because he expected more and he said that it wasn't his biggest pay day, but that's comparing it with his fight against TJ which was on the Islam vs Olives card. Obviously that was gonna sell more. The dude was also pretty salty, so he is not gonna give the most clearheaded assessment.

They fucked up for real this time , they do deserve it. Fucking shitty card for the price.

Whole shit, do you just spend all day on sherdog making posts and shitting on fighters?

Cringe post, and cringe poster....

They arent losing money on it. The Gate's over 20 mill, the Saudi's sponsored it. They wont make as much as they would have if it were a normal event because they spent so much producing it but they arent gonna lose money.

Well he's a star cause they say he's a star so he's a star

All honesty he has fun fights and good hands but is sort of derpy and stonery as a person. Not really too much mainstream appeal outside MMA. But he does have some decent popularity with younger fans in particular

Ticket sales aren't a fair measurement for this one when it's crazy expensive face value and I don't know a single fighter from the regular prelims nor the first two fights on the PPV.

He isn't a McGregor or Ronda, but I'd be surprised if he isn't top 4 that they currently have.

Jones/McGregor - Tier 1 (but barely active)

Poatan and Sean - Tier 2

Who do they have currently that is actually active that you are confident is bigger than Sean?

Islam is a star in the middle east events no doubt, but in America? I would guess Sean's slightly bigger.

Give him a fight against Umar and it will sell.
