Rushdie won the Booker for Midnight's Children 5 years before The Satanic Versus was even published. He's also one of the two (Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the other) most important early developers of Magic Realism, which is a pretty significant literary movement.

If he'd never had to deal with the Fatwas he'd have likely written at least another novel or two (he published almost nothing during the 10 years he was in hiding).
