Ryan Hall submitting Henry Matamoros

the way diaz passed his guard is the way ryan likes people to pass, i dont think diaz would pass like that 2 times out of 10. he likes when people smash the legs down because as soon as he brakes one of those grips, your triangled. he said the only way to efectively defend the upside down guard is to walk around to the regular guard.
also, i seen a comment about him not winning panams/mundials... he also won the first no-gi worlds, i seen this in person, he owned everyone in his bracket and i know the one who was supposidly the best besides him in that division is now a brown belt(with jack mcvicker). look for ryan to win gi and nogi at the panams. good luck to him.

I almost think Ryan is more hype than anything. He has a cool looking guard and he can go upside down inverted guard or whatever it is. Once someone passes his guard he seems to get destroyed(Diaz easily subbed him)

From the matches I've seen he goes for the same thing over and over.

"Man am I inspired by those words. Thanks a lot Mark, I totally think differently, I love what I do more now. To be the best you have to fight the best. I already know that I am the best but I am going to fuck this little bitch up on March 15th and then we'll see who's the best for real. Matamoros"
Thanks for that piece of info, bjjholland1980. I don't follow too many MMA/grappling boards so I didn't know about this. I don't know if there's any history between Henry and Ryan or if Henry was just excited about going against someone as well regarded as Ryan and the machismo just got flowing. I will say this, I train at Henry's gym and the few times I've heard Ryan's name mentioned it was in a very respectful light.

I do admit that Henry is a competitor through and through and can get pretty hot headed when he's going into a competition.

What a goddamn douche.
...
Not only did the guy he fought SUCK, but hes a dick and deserved to get his ass kicked.
I'm not much of a trash talker myself so it's hard for me to defend Henry's bravado, but I will get in on this one. I know, I know...he talked some smack and got beat by a solid grappler who seems to be a nice guy to boot (I've never met the guy so I'm going on what other people have said). That ONE thing certainly doesn't make Henry a douche or a dick. He's a great guy, great competitor and great instructor. He watches out for his students during training and competition in so many ways I won't bother going into it. They say a school/gym's culture flows from the leader...if that's the case then all you need to do is to stop by the school for open mat. You'll see that all the guys in the gym are nothing but class act guys. I promise this all stems from how Henry conducts himself.

Oh and as far as Henry sucking? He was competing in this game long before there was any BJJ in WI...back when the game wasn't MMA, it was NHB. I was present at his first NHB fight where he fought someone w/ at least 50-60lbs on him in a crowded 10'x10' room in somebody's unheated house in the middle of January. He's competed against top names like Royler Gracie. Make no mistake the man is a warrior.

I don't take offense to people calling Henry on his trash talking. If you don't know the man I can easily see how he'd seem like a jerk, but I do want to clear the air on what kind of guy he really is.

Sherdogger Brian Mclaughlin has a couple wins over Hall in no gi by using good posture, good patience, good timing, and good wrestling. He's worked him by double digit points and subbed him before, I believe. Check your youtube etc.

I think someone with a strong wrestling base (along with 5+ years of bjj, of course) is the style match up that works best against a guy like Ryan Hall. Get a quick takedown, maintain posture, patiently work to control his hips from on top, execute that go-to heavy pass that all wrestlers develop, and rack up some points. Patience and control would seem to be the best way to approach a guy with as many funky and quick attacks as Ryan Hall. I think that's what Brian Mclaughlin has used to beat him a couple of times....

Same thing when Justin Rader beat Hall. Solid wrestling + a good BJJ base and Ryan didn't have an answer for him. He put a a good, competitive fight, but Rader controlled it the entire time.

I understand what you're saying and you seem like a genuinely nice guy.

However, from what I can see there are no excuses for that behavior. Writing those comments, then refusing to shake hands after the fight is the height of douchebaggery.

As far him sucking; well honestly this is the first time I heard of him and/or saw him compete. He didn't do anything all that impressive and he got subbed pretty damn quick for a black belt. Sure, everyone gets caught, no problem. But if you say you're "going to fuck this little bitch up for real" when its obvious you instigated the problem, and when I have NEVER EVER EVER seen Ryan Hall with so much as a dirty look on his face for a fellow competitor, or anything less than a kind word for anyone coming to talk to him - well, suffice it to say I don't like your instructor very much.

Competing against Royler Gracie - what does that mean? I could go to the worlds in the black belt division and compete against Roger, will that make me any better?

If he really does have some decent grappling please show us some more vids.

Heres another video of Henry fighting some guy named Chris Lynd.

I dont see anything to change my opinion of the guy, sorry.

Unless your a black belt, no you couldnt. You have to compete in your belt divsion....

If you bumped yourself up and wore a black, expect to catch a ton of grief and most likely get the boot.

I don't understand. Why is it that whenever Ryan Hall wins a match, there are people who feel that they need to post combats where he has lost? Is it to prove to themselves that he can be beaten or to make themselves feel less inadequate by comparison?

This seems silly to me. Of course he can be beaten. Why must some harp on the few times he has been defeated semi-recently? It doesn't seem very productive to me.

Jmcorro,

It is good of you to come here and post in defense of Henry's character. Anyone can be frustrated or say something they don't really mean. I am glad to hear that he is a good guy.

when people talk about his fundamentals not being solid. i just want to know who the hell are you comparing him to that make him appear not to have a solid base?

i have watched alot of his fights and he is solid. i have seen him play top game and bottom game.

any event sponsored by ibjjf requires proof of ranking from the school your from. and the school also has to be registered with the ibjjf.

I wasnt being serious; Im making a point.

Any black belt can "compete against" any other black belt. That doesnt say one thing or another about the skill of either black belt. If some no name black belt gets subbed by Saulo in the first round of the mundials this year, does that say anything good about his skill level? Of course not.

BJJ competitions are completely open. Anyone can enter and fight anyone else at any given time.
