russians and bjj??

In my opinion its a combination of a cultural pride thing, and a money thing. I don't think most Russians have alot of money to pay to fly top BJJ instructors in to coach them.

One thing that I think backs that point up is the things I've heard here and there about the fact that alot of new and higher tech gym equiment is not widely available in Russia because of the cost. So they use alot more of the old school equipment and training methods, like kettle bells and hitting a giant truck tire with a sledge hammer.

Just look at those training videos of Fedor and his team working out for reference.

There are only a handful of great/good Russian MMA fighters. Learning BJJ has nothing to do with it since they already train Sambo, which in the words of Fedor's coach, "is no worse than BJJ".

Fedor said himself he wanted to fight Nog on the ground to show that his ground game is just as good.

Submissions are submissions, BJJ isn't the only form. Look at guys like Saku, Barnett, Ken Shamrock (in his prime)....none of those guys train BJJ, they all use catch wrestling yet they're some of these submission guys in the history of the sport.

cause fedor is more than your average sambo fighter,
he is the karelin of mma, he has probably figured out alot of his technique by himself, i heard that he didn

this is comparing apples to oranges, when I was training in sambo there would be some bjj guys that would be training with us once in a blue moon and they'd be puking their guts out, and id go to their gym to try it and and my hips and back would be sore for a week

there's this video

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/E1fRRDwOBdk&hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/E1fRRDwOBdk&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

who starts on the left side of the screen in bjj and right side is sambo

there's this video but i don't know who's bjj and who's sambo, i can only supose by the gi colors and styles

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/E1fRRDwOBdk&hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/E1fRRDwOBdk&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

who starts on the left side of the screen in bjj and right side is sambo

The blue guy is the bjj practicitoner, and the red guy is the sambo player...it's dumb to say one art is better than the other, it's just better cross train both because both have their pro's and con's.

another random vid, i just typed "bjj vs sambo" on youtube

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1TpI2e4AVQM&hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1TpI2e4AVQM&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

BJJ is superior to catch because of the fact that there are experts at every facet of grappling within BJJ. That is why BJJ guys have been able to enter sambo competitions and win.

Russian sambo guys win BJJ tournaments in Russia pretty often. Is taht do you think because sambo has "experts at every facet of grappling"? Or maybe it's because one does not have as many practitioners/experts/enthusiasts as the other in a given country?

not many BJJ schools in russia. Judo/Sambo is the much more popular grappling art in russia. The more popular an art or sport is, the better its competition and competitors are.

Oleg back in the day even scared the Gracies on the ground. However his striking sucked so bad Renzo just Ko'ed him

rusians don't train in bjj commonly because of the cultural bond with the art. Japanese and Korean fighters get shoot fighters and judokas to train for takedowns and ground work, americans and candaians typically get freestyle wrestlers and bjjers, etc. etc. Brazilians train in bjj and boxing often times. Its how they train.

there was another bjj vs sambo match today at Dream.4
RALEK GRACIE X GADZHIEV ALAVUTDIN

The real question is: brazilians and sambo?

I'm willing to guess there are as many russians that train
BJJ, as there are brazilians that train Sambo.

Introduction to Russian Martial Art

No rank, no rules, no pre-orchestrated movement, no limitations (except for the "Law of Nature"), Russian Martial Art is a system of education in human biomechanics and the study of human behavior under extreme situations. Students of Russian Martial Art are guided to introspect their vision to explore their full human potential. The learning environment is based upon ease, equality and enjoyment. Movement is natural and free, and acquirement of skill is based on the study of Russian folk dances, Slavic folklore, and natural laws of interdisciplinary kinesiology, biomechanics, and psycho-physiology.

In Russian Martial Art, the main goal of a person is to render the adversary harmless while minimizing losses for both self and foe. Students learn to work efficiently in any situation that requires defense, prevention of aggression, or conflict resolution. This is how the Russian Martial Artist returns to the original Law of the community of life. Learning Russian Martial Art, students acquire great power as fighters, but more importantly as a human beings, increasing ones value for health and life, for both self and others. Both in combat and in life, students treat other creatures with awareness and compassion. When necessary, firm action is issued, but never in a callous or careless manner, and when all other option have been considered. "You life is not your alone; it belongs to your friends, family and community" (ibid. Alexander Ivanovich Retuinskih), or as is said in the Cossack Cadet Code: "The life of your friend is always more valuable than your own. You can die yourself, but rescue your friend." This is the crux and cornerstone of Russian Martial Art: the preservation and harmony with the community of life.

The folk wisdom of ancient Slavic martial traditions dates to the activity of the proto-Indo-European nomadic warrior-hunters of approximately 5,000 BCE, passed recorded from father to son in families for generations of pre-Soviet Russia, and then only among the elite combat specialist subdivisions ("Spetsnaz") of the former USSR. Only one Americans in history, Scott Sonnon was inducted as an instructor of this long, noble heritage in the attempt to bring the world together in fraternity. The training system, in America, for people of sound mind, improves quality of life, through Russian health system, sport science advancements, and elite combative preparation. In the year 2000, one of the sportive derivations of Russian Martial Art, named Sambo, will be an Olympic sport.

1. We dont have pro-BJJ schools in Russia
2. MMA is not popular in Russia so most MMA fighters are simply guys who train only SAMBO to compete in sambo but then on some point in life get recruted by Red Devil , LEgion or some small team. And from all teams only Red Devil train basic aspects of BJJ.
3. Its cultural thing
