russians and bjj??

i am not denying that, but still there is no reason to not fly in some bjj coaches to help the russians evolve their ground game,
that is what i am questioning.
since they have flewed in alot of cuban boxers to help them in that aspect.

Americans never fly in judo coaches to train their takedowns, it's the same thing.

nope cause they have wrestling coaches, and fedor was almost subbed by mark hunt so his ground defence does ave flaws, if he had 10bjj blackbelts training with him he would probably never been in that situaiotn.

When was he almost subbed by Hunt? When hunt was attempting a submission wrong, and Fedor wasn't worried?

Fedor would two fights with Nog without even coming close to being caught in a submission.

It is pretty simple, if you have sambo then you really don't get much out of training bjj except waste of time.

Im russian, i trained both Sambo and Bjj, and traditional JapJJ. The thing is , those coaches who train you in sambo, they know all the most important keys and elements to bjj, also including a lot of judo. After learning sambo i made a transition to JapJJ and then to Bjj. Sambo taught me how to enter and get a better balanced throw positions, knowing how to shift your wieght when you are on your back. JapJJ is very soft art, very simple mooves that require only minimum amount of energy used, submission where mostly from the top positions. And Bjj teached me how to really explode in the right positions, gave me better mobility , and great usage of my hips.

People dont train Bjj in Russia cuz all the true russian coaches say that sambo is the universal grapling art, and it derives the best out of the greates arts.

You can say the same about catch guys vs. JJ. Catch guys make BJJ guys look silly mostly due to leg locks.

BJJ is superior to catch because of the fact that there are experts at every facet of grappling within BJJ. That is why BJJ guys have been able to enter sambo competitions and win. Within BJJ, also, there are leglock experts, guard players, top game players, guys who have great takedowns, armlock guys, etc. Your statement that BJJ guys neglect footlocks shows your ignorance, as most clubs have at least several guys who are footlock specialists.

Well, if you'd trained either BJJ or sambo you'd know Hunt wasn't anywhere near to submitting Fedor (watch the arm and shoulder motion closely), and that as soon as Hunt adjusted to do it correctly Fedor escaped easily.

Beyond that, like someone said, sambo is to Russia like BJJ is to Brazil. I doubt you'll find many Brazilians who learn sambo either :icon_chee

Tell that to the handful of sambo practitioners I've seen check out my BJJ club since I started, only to find that there are many elements of grappling sambo did not prepare them for.

this should be moved to grappling section there are many pofessionals guys there who can answer

Ahh...you BJJ guys just aren't going to be satisfied until you believe that BJJ is the last submission grappling art on Earth.

SAMBO is a great art, but like all other arts, it has it's strengths, weaknesses, and needs to be adjusted for MMA/real life. The coaches/fighters adjust the art when needed. Also, it's ever evolving.

Also, for those of you who say SAMBO doesn't have chokes, remember that basically every SAMBO school also teaches Judo, which has many chokes.

This is like asking a brazilian if he trains Sambo.
Actually, Rolls Gracie(who was supposedly better than Rickson) LOVED SAMBO and was a national champion in the art. The Machados were trained in SAMBO as well.

It's more like asking a Brazilian to give credit to any submission grappling art other than BJJ(except for maybe the small group of Luta Livre practitioners.)

About to start classes with Roger Machados Farmers Branch location soon, cant wait

I'm Russian and I've trained both and Judo as well. I have a blue belt in bjj.

1). BJJ is not easily available in Russia (I work abroad, that's where I learn it). Sambo is everywhere. Also Combat Sambo competitions outside of the army were not as common as they are starting to be now.

2). There is nothing in BJJ that Sambo, as an art, doesn't cover. There are things many trainers do not cover. That's to do with the fact that competition Sambo that most instructors train for has limited need for intricate ground game and a lot of need for wrestling and Judo. A lot of Russian Sambo guys compete in Judo as well.

3). When I started training bjj, my guard game was mediocre at best. But none of the people in my gym, save the instructor, could take me down or get top position unless I gave it to them. And that's for a white belt who hasn't had a grappling practice in 10 years since my Sambo days when I was a kid. It's not that bjj doesn't cover that, they just don't practice it as much as in Sambo. Same as Sambo guys not practicing much from the guard -- the guard is in fact a loosing position in sports Sambo.

4). Russian fighters do not need BJJ specifically. They need to work on their Sambo in ways that are more applicable to MMA or things like ADCC if they want. Because Sambo has all the same techniques that you need.

Zangief was a Russian and a pure grappler, what style did he have?
