Russia/Ukraine Megathread V5

This "who will give the jets to Ukraine" bullshit is embarrassing.

None of this is remotely as coy as these governments seem to think.

You're BOTH supplying Ukraine, get the fuck over it.

Absolutely embarassing how there has been all this talk about the fighter jets for a few days now and how US officials were all about it and omg yes please give to Ukraine. But as soon as Poland says that if the US wants it, go ahead and do it, the US no longer supports it. Such weak leadership which wouldn’t happen if not for the stolen election (but I won’t go into that and derail the thread, sorry boys)

Thankfully the actor brigade is ready to step in and solve this mess through public outrage on twatter

Yeah, honestly - fuck that shit. Poland will give them fighter jets but only if the US takes them first and then gives them to Ukraine? No.

Might be easy to say when you're safe. Harder to say when you're the one trapped, invaded, and watching children be killed. When evil attacks you, I think it's reasonable human nature to cry out for help from others.

I suppose good men can just look the other way when evil is afoot.

It's easy to say period.

So...(and this is just me piecing some stuff together): I think this move caught the US off guard. The Poles were on their game, kudos to them. But, I do think there's still a way to have them get these planes to the Ukrainians. I think the US doesn't want the optics of Ukrainian pilots taking off from an American AF base in Germany and heading straight into the war (uhh...sorry..."military exercise") theater. I think the workaround **could** be that US pilots (those familiar with Migs) fly them to a non NATO country that is okay with it (see: Moldova or something like that). The Ukrainian pilots get to that country and then fly the planes into the Ukraine and then are in the fight.

Obviously it's sad that the whole thing has to sound like a spat between high school girls ("Umm...no...I didn't tell Becky that Josh put the moves on Brittany, I told Brianna and SHE told Becky so this isn't MY fault...") but that's the reality of where we are.

The only feasible way of doing it, that I can see, is to send Clint Eastwood to Poland on a top secret mission to steal the MiG and then fly it into the Ukraine before the Russian air force can catch up with him. And then do it 28 more times.

Yea and it isn’t just the US incompetence. I mean I get Poland, being right on the border with Belarus and not being as powerful. But it seems there is no coordination between NATO members with some of these things. It honestly shows how weak they and NATO are when they aren’t the ones in control and dictating everything

even with the sanctions. The US didn’t want to at first but then acted like everyone had to, but Germany, France and the UK were reluctant. Now the US is the only one who cut off Russian exports of oil, while the others lag behind.

but moreover it shows that none of these countries are going to help Ukraine here with anything other than kind words and economic warfare which Russia has way to bypass and currently are with China’s help.

How it started

how it is going

Absolute Shit show. Especially now how everyone and their momma in the media, twitterverse and even US officials are saying Ukraine needs these jets!

America could end this right now.

A country just got invaded and people are dying and crying for help and we are sitting here with our 780 billion dollar a year military and doing nothing.

War sucks but sometimes, this is the way.
Yeah but the hard part is doing that without there being a nuclear war.

This situation still calls for a tightrope walker to negotiate. Little too much one way or another and things can get really hairy really quick. So makes sense.
The West is trying to leave a diplomatic window for a solution on the table. If they push to hard, they could make Putin forced into a corner with no way out. Unfortunately that mean that the Ukrainian people are expendable.

Please merge any and all nonspecific threads pertaining to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine here.

No heavy flaming
No personal insults
No derailing

Please keep up with manners and civil discourse

Your memes go in the fucking meme thread!!!!

The merge went wrong, it knocked this post onto the second page (50 post per page, the alpha setting.)

Can't NATO countries "sell" the jets to Ukraine or some shit? I don't understand.

Countries are literally sending them weapons, but jets are a no-no?

Don't get me wrong, I do not want the US or NATO directly involved in a conflict.. but you'd think they'd have easy ways to get this done without looking like clowns in the media.

Yeah I think so too. People are going to get pissed off though.

I think this admin is a clown show (but to be fair, I thought the last one was too--I'm old and cynical or whatever I guess). But I thought they had handled this...at least not tragically so far. Decent, at least on some fronts.

But this is a disaster. They needed to be out in front of this. At LEAST, they needed to be keeping up. And instead, they're 3 steps behind and now scrambling and trying to figure out what to do. It's actually a little embarrassing.

Poland checkmated our ass, badly.

Yeah, this jets transfer is an embarrassing shit show for sure.

As for sanctions, it couldn't have gone much better.

Sure, some nations will be more reluctant than others, but this is as co-ordinated as anyone could possibly hope. One week in, and things are actually getting done. The jokes about NATO and the UN squabbling and wasting time just don't apply.

The US is in a position to easily cut off Russian gas and oil - good for them for doing it.

But there's also this weird idea that somehow China and India are going to be able to negate the damage down to the Russian economy. That's IMPOSSIBLE. You don't lose most of your customer base, but not worry because other people will buy your products - you actually worry MORE about the price those others are going to end up paying.

You think those nations will give Russia a helping hand by paying the same amount as Western nations? Come on... No chance. China will rinse Russia dry for as little as possible.

The West is trying to leave a diplomatic window for a solution on the table. If they push to hard, they could make Putin forced into a corner with no way out. Unfortunately that mean that the Ukrainian people are expendable.
They're not signees of any mutual support agreements so yes, they're expandable. Unfortunately. And while Putin would have them remain so because that would, in effect, leave Ukraine his bitch, self determination should 5rump the wishes of a bully. At least in my mind. But...
Yeah but the hard part is doing that without there being a nuclear war.
American boots in Ukraine would definitely turn this into an all out global conflict. So, tightrope.

Sucks

So we're sending Kamala over there to...I actually don't know what the hell she's doing. She has zero foreign policy experience, I really am not sure what she's going to bring to the table here.

Would it be crazy for Biden to name Obama as some sort of special ambassador to go represent the US? I understand not wanting to undermine your VP (and thus your admin to a degree), but we're talking about the potential for WW3 here.

I'd be way more comfortable with Obama meeting with foreign leaders than with Kamala Harris doing it. Nothing to do with gender, everything to do with experience.
