Russia/Ukraine Megathread V5

So we're sending Kamala over there to...I actually don't know what the hell she's doing. She has zero foreign policy experience, I really am not sure what she's going to bring to the table here.

Would it be crazy for Biden to name Obama as some sort of special ambassador to go represent the US? I understand not wanting to undermine your VP (and thus your admin to a degree), but we're talking about the potential for WW3 here.

I'd be way more comfortable with Obama meeting with foreign leaders than with Kamala Harris doing it. Nothing to do with gender, everything to do with experience.

We should send Dennis Rodman 1:22

They're not signees of any mutual support agreements so yes, they're expandable. Unfortunately. And while Putin would have them remain so because that would, in effect, leave Ukraine his bitch, self determination should 5rump the wishes of a bully. At least in my mind. But...

American boots in Ukraine would definitely turn this into an all out global conflict. So, tightrope.

Sucks
If America goes to war, we are bring our best bud Canada with us. I believe that the US has probably had some line of communication with Russia that leads our government to believe Putin would take immediate action if we supplied air support of any kind. That includes giving Ukraine fighter jets.

it's funny because I agree with the title, but the post is bonkers

You know they have us deeply conditioned because the idea of giving concessions to Russia to end this rarely gets thought of and never gets mentioned.
They probably aren't getting any concessions because the point needs to be made that we can't have land grabs like this anymore. It's not the 1930's world anymore and there are plenty of dictators around the world that would love to increase their power at the expense of their neighbors. Dropping sanctions and ceding the land they grabbed in '14 would set a bad precedent and fail to deter future military actions.

Meh. I actually didn't do the merge. But I'm ok that it happened
These people are uncouth, how do you expect them to follow the rules if it isnt the first post of the thread?

Yeah, this jets transfer is an embarrassing shit show for sure.

As for sanctions, it couldn't have gone much better.

Sure, some nations will be more reluctant than others, but this is as co-ordinated as anyone could possibly hope. One week in, and things are actually getting done. The jokes about NATO and the UN squabbling and wasting time just don't apply.

The US is in a position to easily cut off Russian gas and oil - good for them for doing it.

But there's also this weird idea that somehow China and India are going to be able to negate the damage down to the Russian economy. That's IMPOSSIBLE. You don't lose most of your customer base, but not worry because other people will buy your products - you actually worry MORE about the price those others are going to end up paying.

You think those nations will give Russia a helping hand by paying the same amount as Western nations? Come on... No chance. China will rinse Russia dry for as little as possible.

The best sanctions against Russia were those made by financial institutions not nations. Swift and such. The power is in banks. It's in the open now. What has been done to Russia can be done to any nation.

Certain countries have legitimate reasons to not sanction Russia. Ie India.

Pushing India Russia and China together is honest the dumbest thing I've seen the west do in years... and there some dumb things there.

Russia and China were already together. India too to a lesser extent. I dont see the problem.

I know we all talk about it in terms of a new world war, but what would a war with Russia really mean? On its face, all-out war with Russia means war between NATO+possibly some other EU nations on one side, and Russia+Belarus on the other side. Which isn't really much of a contest - Russia is large, but also hilariously sparsely populated virtually everywhere east of the Ural Mountains. We'd outnumber it 10 to 1, and economically the discrepancy is even worse. It sounds more like a major European war, than a world war.

If China gets involved, either directly on Russia's side or by starting a separate war over Taiwan, that's another matter entirely. But would that happen?

I think they give Kamala assignments they know are losing issues and bad optics. They but her in charge of the border, inflation and now this. Meanwhile Joe just goes to Delaware every weeekend to have Jill give spoon feed him the puréed peas and inject him with steroids to get him through the next week.

Plus they are sending her to Poland after Poland just played us. So yea, have no idea what she is supposed to do other than look like an idiot.

this link also states Germany came out and agreed to not move forward with the fighter jets… also says she is going to meet with Justin Trudeau in Poland. I can only imagine how great and productive a meeting with her and Trudy in Poland is gonna go

Forcing them closer together is a massive mistake. Imo

Especially how the Indian students have been treated.

Add in the element that just sitting back would imply condoning recolonization of a now free people and the message could be seen as a signal for a free for all.

The catch is that foreign adventures by western powers gotta stop as well. And that's a good thing. Everyone keep their mitts of others stuff. Ok?

It's funny how people attribute the Russian invasion of Ukraine to a thought experiment and precursor to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, but at the same time, the West made this happen and has pushed China and Russia closer together.

Both these statements can't be true.

Given Russia launched an unprovoked attack on Ukraine, the urgency is more likely to have come from China, IF ANYWHERE, but even more likely, the urgency actually came from Putin who's just a bit of a clown in his latter years and has lost touch with all reality.

There'd be lots of fuckery from inside the EU and Serbia as well. No, not major powers, but definitely complications. Orbán is loathe to call out Russia and Serbia will always side with the Ruskies. Then there's the question of China.

I don't think it's as simple as numbers on a tally sheet.

Who's considering the invasion a " thought experiment " ?
