It’s no secret that Ronda Rousey has avoided the limelight since her loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193.
Prior to losing the bantamweight title, ‘Rowdy’ was a frequent guest on mainstream TV shows and carried the torch for women’s MMA. Her abrupt departure from the public eye led many to speculate about her mental state of mind, but Rousey assured fans that she’s as focused as ever.
The Olympic bronze medalist
recently told ESPN that her decision to retreat into privacy came after a sudden realization: that money couldn’t buy her true happiness. Rousey also laid into to two of combat sport’s biggest stars, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.
"I was just trying to make too many people happy," Rousey said. "But when I try and do favors and make everybody else happy, at the end of the day, they walk away happy and I'm the one who has to deal with the depression. All the pay-per-views in the world, all the money in the world, it means f*cking nothing to me because I lost.”
"If money is the motivation, then f*ck you,” she continued. "All these Money people. … Money [Floyd] Mayweather, Money [Conor] McGregor. I see they're trying to do an angle or whatever. People buy it. … The worship of money in our society is so deep. But just because that's the easiest way to keep people's attention or entertain them doesn't mean that's the right way.”
In Rousey’s absence, ‘The Notorious’ has filled the void and established himself as the biggest star in MMA. McGregor has continued to break pay-per-view records and hype a potential mega-money boxing match against Mayweather.
Rousey, though, is determined to reclaim the 135 lbs title she lost last year against Holm. The former champion will take on current champ Amanda Nunes at UFC 207. The pay-per-view, which also features a bantamweight championship tilt between Dominick Cruz and Cody Garbrandt, takes place on Dec. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
