The word nationalism, like discrimination has been reduced to one single and least charitable component. And it's become synonymous with evil, expansionist societies.

I don't think nationalism is always bad but unquestionably its led to more genocide and purges than the Islamic empires of old. The problem with nationalism its that its often built on a myth of a homogeneous nation which rarely ever exists. Most places on the eve of modernity, yes even the so called homogeneous nation states of Europe, are actually incredibly diverse with regional variations in languages and customs and religious practices. And so the intellectuals who create the nationalist movement, usually from the cosmopolitan capital, create an archetypal national citizen in their image and everyone is forced to fit the mold and those who don't are left out. Often subjected to cultural genocide, sometimes reduced to 2nd class citizens, and not uncommonly expelled or liquidated altogether.

I don't want to treat it with rose colored glasses but up until the late 19th century or so yeah it does seem that it was far more tolerant and multicultural than Christian Europe. Its a shame to read about the Ottoman cities of old and the presence of Greeks, Armenians, and Jews and how integral they were to the life of those cities only to realize that those communities were eventually expunged during the course of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

The Dutch Republic was a scarce exemption, but yeah overall it was a pretty intolerant place. I mean they had a 100 hundred year war to fight about if the catholics or protestants were right lol.

I don't deny it, part of my defense of traditional societies is that those societies had a lot more tolerance for that than we tend to think and that a lot of oppression of queers emerged from modernity.
