Sweden didn't even seem bad when I was there, I liked it. Would be a migrant worker again for sure. I'm willing to ignore social issues for money.
Can't immagine how we'd act. People are grinding their teeth about taking in Ukrainians, FFS
The same groups will always whinge about migration regardless of the specifics or any actual issues anyway.
Just look at the number of Americans whinging about Swedish immigration.
Over here, just in my lifetime, they whinged about Greeks and Italians, then Vietnamese and Cambodians, then Lebanese, then Indians/Pakistanis/Bangladeshis and Chinese, then broadened to "Muslims", then "Africans".
Literally the exact same people. National Action, One Nation etc
Regardless of whether the migrants were refugees or skilled migration.(and our integration is good, with a skilled migrant to refugee ratio exceeding 10:1 and refugees becoming a net economic benefit after 15 years on average).
The arguments over the impact on labour prices, the failure of infrastructure to keep up with population growth, the increased price of housing, the increase in economic polarisation (the rich benefit, the middle class are largely unaffected and the poor are worse off) and the additional environmental load never come into it. It's just general conservatism and identity politics, people that want to rehash the "white Australia" policy and generally don't like any change.
It's why John Howard could open the doors to mass immigration while making a song and dance about "getting tough on boat people", and keep them quiet.
I've never seen anything good come out of that sort of identity politics in any country I've lived in.
