Recent fights/results/news from ONE Championship

next week the headline fight is:

Yod-IQ vs Khomutov.

Well, at least Yod won't be unfamiliar with that whole 'prepare to fight against a Russian puncher' thing. He has fought:

Balyko
Musaev
Tupiev
Dayakaev

and now he gets Khomutov.

i thought it was a pretty darn good OFF last night

good performance and KO by the japanese kickboxer.

shocking kicking by the Algerian dude, didn't seem to offer much more but damn, the dude's got legs

I wasn't too surprised Duangsompong got KO'd by Dem Hands of Dat Dagestani. Like i have said before he's like a crap version of Ferrari, hasn't got the same footwork or the sting in his kicks to keep the fight at long range so he will have the same vulnerabilities as Ferrari against punchers but they will be exposed more often

Raeksaensuk - Taopluong was a mad low-quality brawl they were both exhausted after 5 minutes, Raek was hunting that body all night

Kaotem - Lansing was an absolute beauty

Thepthaksin, absolutely pristine performance, an absolute 'How to...' masterclass of distance control and using occasional kicks from the outside >>>> total dominant clinchfuckery on the inside. He fucken ragdolled that boy, unbeaten Russian puncher, my ass, that's how to do it, eat my knees tovarich

then the Sornsueknoi fight was a fucken banger

Ortikov, he's a difficult fighter, man. Sooner or later someone is going to back him up- i am pretty sure nobody in OFF has backed him up for any significant period in like 7 fights- and it will be interesting when they do, but until then, his very fast in and out footwork, fast hands and decent variety of strikes, and the very high tempo he sets, are very difficult to deal with as a package. I thought Pompet won the first round IIRC, and maybe he should have stuck to the gameplan which looked to be working for him early, good body kicks and leg kicks. I guess Ortikov made adjustments for rd2 and Pompet just couldn't adjust himself. It seemed especially that Ortikov's tempo, the pendulum stepping in&out and the volume of strikes, were just too much for Pompet. He's so fast in and out that he is very difficult to to counter-fight, which is why I think backing him the fuck up has to be the gameplan. someone sooner or later is going to back him up and hack his legs up, either that or maul him around in the clinch, I don't think playing KB-style strike-counterstrike in the middle of the ring is the way to beat this guy.

To me that fight proves Ortikov must be a threat to nearly anyone at 125-130lbs.
One thing about Ortikov nobody has capitalised on is he has very short arms. Its almost strange looking. I know the in out kickboxing style somewhat makes up for it.
But its something to capitalize on with the right gameplan.

Yeah, definitely parts to his game that you *could* capitalise on, but when he has the whole ring to play with his footwork makes the windows of opportunity very slim, its why i think backing him up (and kicking fvck out of his legs) is the key to beating him, reduce his room to manoevre.

  • Yod-IQ Or Pimolsri vs. Kirill Khomutov (Muay Thai – bantamweight)
  • Petnamkhong Mongkolpet vs. Pataknin Sinbimuaythai (Muay Thai – 122-pound catchweight)
  • Tonglampoon FA Group vs. Mungkorn Boomdeksean (Muay Thai – 119-pound catchweight)
  • Mahahin Petkiatpet vs. Dionatha Santos Tobias (Muay Thai – 118-pound catchweight)
  • Songpandin Chor Kaewwiset vs. Lothong Kruaynaimuanggym (Muay Thai – 128-pound)
  • Pol Pascual vs. Petkiri Pongsevenfarm (Muay Thai – 126-pound catchweight)
  • Khunsuek Superbon Training Camp vs. Samy Sana (Muay Thai – featherweight)
  • Rustam Yunusov vs. Alfie Ponting (Muay Thai – flyweight)
  • Uzair Ismoiljonov vs. Rikito (Kickboxing – bantamweight)
  • Tantang Suansunandhagym vs. Waka Tsujii (Muay Thai – atomweight)
  • Marwin Quirante vs. Musa Musazade (MMA – strawweight)
  • Imran Satiev vs. Zhamoliddin Rakhmonzhonov (MMA – flyweight)

Samy Sana's return after ages out is weird, i wonder if this is a showcase to try and platform Khunsuek as one of the few bigger Thais?

not much else to get excited about but Petnamkhong Mongkolpet vs. Pataknin Sinbimuaythai and Tonglampoon FA Group vs. Mungkorn Boomdeksean should both be exciting

i haven't ranted about this yet but they have made the match i have been waiting for for about a year

One Fight Night 26

Kongthoranee vs Nakrob

I'll doubtless break this down in excruciating detail later down the line, for the time being i have to have a bitch at One

Puric vs Mahmoudi is also on the card at flyweight, and the way it is being portrayed on the One site, that fight is to decide the next flyweight contender

I will just say Nakrob and Kongthoranee would both utterly, totally brutalise Puric and how that scrub is continually given main event chances when there are infinitely superior fighters like Nak and Kongm really frustrates me.

also, it feels like it may be an anticlimax for me as *I believe* you can only watch One Fight Nights in the UK if you have Sky TV, I don't think they put them on the Sky youtube channel live? in which case the One fight i have been most looking forward to, ever, is behind a paywall. hopefully my NowTv subscription is still valid

also this will be on some time between 2am and 6am i think UK time, absolutely no chance i catch it, absolutely gutted. i'll have to rely on them uploading it onto their youtube channel some time in the next 2 months if i am lucky

I really hope they start to do proper things in the flyweight division without Rodtang as a champion. Get out Puric and Smith to the top ranking.

I swear Nakrob could KO Puric and Smith on the same night back to back. I mean maybe i am exaggerating just a little bit but, you know... the resentment i feel towards Puric probably isn't healthy. There are some great fighters in One at flyweight and I am positive plenty of them would have the beating of the gruesome twosome that you mention (Puengluang comes to mind?)

there is a Russian kid, 17 years old, Yusupov, fighting on Friday, i saw his debut again last night and remembered he is the guy who had an excellent match with a young Australian guy i think it was in OFF79. anyway Yusupov looks a serious talent and very, very polished technically for any age never mind 17, similar to Ortikov as a southpaw with excellent footwork but if anything he looks smoother, his hands seem a bit crisper than Ortikov. He's got a fantastic power-teep and really mixes traditional/orthodox striking with a bit more innovative euro-style well. the obvious comparison for 17 years old is that idiot Ghazali, he's not as heavy-handed but looks more technically-polished all round than Ghazali does, to me. definitely a fighter to watch.

so normally i would have a massive hate-boner for Estupinan, spazzy bouncey style, jumps into every attack, stupid fucking nickname GTFOH

however he is fighting Johan Ghazali at One 170, and Ghazali is one of the most obnoxious dicks in the sport**** IMO so fuck Ghazali, war Pandaboy I hope he knocks him out with some ugly lunging attack that goes across the whole distance of the ring and looks like how a 12-year old imagines computer game kickboxing to look like and I hope he turns that arrogant little child into a meme with like 50 million views of him flat on his face.

*** after one fight in his interview he said of his opponent 'I knew I have more heart than he has', which, kid, you're fucking 12 years old with like 4 fights and you're talking about a guy with like 60, shut the fuck up you arrogant steroidal manchild you don't know shit about heart, or life, or fucking anything you're a fucking child, and I hope I am waticng the day you get beat and some knt says 'I got more heart than that kid'.

so, like I say Yod-IQ has had no shortage of experience at dealing with Dem Russian Hands in OFF, as Russian punchers are pretty much all he has faced.

Perhaps worrying for him of the ones he has fought, Balyko who he lost to is closest in style and attributes to Khomutov, big puncher with quite fast feet and decent in/out movement. My problem for Yod-IQ is he doesn't have the style and footwork and authoritative kicking game to do what Ferrari did with Khomutov, and keep him literally on the end of his kicks for 9 minutes. whoever Yod-IQ fights he ends up exchanging at close range at some point in the fight, now granted he is *decent* with the hands himself and he's pretty good with the counter-elbows, but still..... I find it difficult to imagine him managing the whole 9 minutes swimming without getting wet, I mean he doesn't try to move as much as Ferrari does, to an extent he seems to *want* to draw his opponent in so he can counter with some punches and elbows. He has a sharp accurate jab but its not as heavy as Khomutov's, which is absolutely excellent and he definitely doesn't want to go jab-for-jab with the Russian.

to me Yod-IQ with his style and attributes would be better off trying to copy Ferrari more, if he focuses on distance control and kicking, his body kick (especially from southpaw) is excellent and a fight-winner in its own right. But he seems to think he can be a bit more successful with the hands than he is (or maybe adapting his style to be more One-friendly) which has got him tagged unnecessarily a few times; against Balyko it seemed to me he may have won 9/9 minutes of that fight but still lost because of the knockdown, once he focussed on that left kick to the body it looked like he was sickening the Russian with it and Balyko was really wary and keeping his distance.

Khomutov is very much a predictable sort of animal, footwork in and out, head movement so consistent its sometimes a bit like a pendulum swinging, decent low kicks, heavy jab and explosive power punching. Predictable but, as Panrit and Cicek and Suakim will tell you, knowing what he is going to try and stopping it aren't quite the same thing

I'm going to go with a very specific prediction, Yod-IQ looks like he wins 2 rounds at least, but takes the L because at some point he's eating a heavy punch and getting knocked down.

Khomutov looked pretty good in there, didnt look basic, showed some good clinching and the occasional nice kick, was never uncomfortable in there against a quality operator. He's not great or anything but he has potential to be if he sticks with it a few more years.

Yeah Khomutov wasn’t outclassed it just looked like Yod-IQ just knew a bit too much for him. Yod adjusted to Khom’s patterns of footwork towards the end of the 1st round and then got his timing down nicely with the kicks and some smart counter punching

Khom’s history in One suggests he will probably beat and mostly KO anyone below the top level and is a threat even to top level fighters

He’s actually lost one of the things I thought was most impressive, his side to side head movement has decreased as his OFF career has gone on

per my prediction the Russian 17 year old *Yunusov not Yusupov* looked pretty good damn again last night. No real ability to gauge his level given his competition so far but he certainly has the ability and technique, the power-teep to the body really started the rot, sickening his opponent and he capitalised with punches to the body immediately.

I'm going to bitch at One again, they have got Nakrob - Kongthoranee lined up next week and no publicity for it at all on their website

meanwhile there is a story on Danial Williams vs Thongpoon and what an epic matchup it is.....

I guess Nakrob and Kongthoranee don't appease the Gods of Just Bleed, enough? One FC, SMDH its clear what their priorities are...

looking ahead at the OFF schedule from whats available on wiki:
OFF90

Catchweight (142 lbs) Muay ThaiThailand Kongklai Sor.Sommaivs.Belarus Antar Kacem
Catchweight (147 lbs) Muay ThaiItaly Alessio Malatestavs.Portugal Fabio Reis
I am guessing Kongklai will have to go against type and push the fight again here, Kacem isn't going to be stood in one spot waiting to get his ribs kicked in so Kong will have to chase him down I suspect
Reis KO's Malatesta, is normal

OFF92
Suakim - Panrit is fucking NICE
Songchainoi vs Yodnumchai is very, very NICE
Glad to see Maisangkum back he's 6/7-0 and very close to a contract, bit disappointed they have given him Watcharapon tho, Watch is a bit of a whipping boy for the better fighters.
but damn, Saukikm - Panrit is a great fking match and the masive pressure of Song vs the out-fighting of Yod will be *chef's kiss*

I don’t know why Yod-IQ doesn’t fight southpaw much more, by the way, he seems much more successful. It really allows him to get his mid kick in, he seems to be able to control distance and dominate rounds just with the left mid kick. Balyko, Dayakaev, Khomutov, I’m sure a majority of his best work was as a lefty and that kick was the most prominent tool by far.
