Pyfer: The Prototype For Poorly Booked Hype Jobs (Blame the UFC, not Joe)

I think this experience was almost perfect for a guy like Pyfer ... he didn't get his ass beat, he won't lose confidence, and he will learn how to use his skills more efficiently
I disagree. He did get his ass beat, by a guy who doesn't normally give proper beatdowns. Got his lead leg chewed up badly, got blasted consistently by a basic jab, had to panic wrestle and when he did, couldn't finish a takedown, got taken down and worked good in the final couple minutes. Should've been a 4-1 win for Jack.

He has 4 strikes, a hook, an overhand, a body jab and a calf kick

That's what I'm saying. It was a logical booking for Pyfer. He's just not where the UFC thought he was.
It was choosing the highest ranked guy they thought he could power punch KO. He need a guy like Tavares first to be honest. Someone good, hard to put away and not to dangerous in terms of a KO. Then he could have fought Jack after that. They tried to skip a step when he needed a harder fight before that if they wanted to build him up.

Good on Pyfer for taking the challenge. Wasn't like he got blasted and sent to the realm like Sheena on Powerslap last night. In case you don't follow Powerslap, Sheena was the Ronda Rousey of Powerslap but she got knocked out on the first slap but the other girl cheated on something so Sheena won but she got knocked out still.

Never heard of this guy till this week, was skeptical about him being the hardest puncher, but of course it's better to watch him fight at least once before forming an opinion.

This guy's not a fighter, he's like Brock, gets punched in the face and it's all down hill.

Gonna happen to ilia when his legs get chopped. Gonna look like a deer in headlights.

Lol they'll give him Tavares now

That was worse than a quick finish to be honest. He basically got dismantled after the first and the blueprint is kinda there to beat him in 5 rounders from here on out. I expect him to look awesome again in 3 rounders and run into the same issues over 5.

He won the first via power, but after that he kinda got beaten in every other aspect of MMA.

Tavares probably gets him out of there to be honest. He knows he just has to weather the first round and get him to tee off. Pre this fight, he probably catches Tavares cold, but now people will just drop the first round to him but get him to push the pace early whilst chopping the leg.

His effort off the back in the 5th was the most telling. He was happy to ride out the round even though he might have been down 3. He kinda gave it away by choice after the eye punch and his leg getting chewed up. That left hook, right cross was looking absolutely on point in the first, until Jack just didn't go away.

I just listened to hermannson on ufc live post fight. He told them at the desk that the game plan was to feel out pyfer in round one and they knew he was going to load up in round one. He said you either have power and not a lot of cardio or you have a lot of cardio and not a lot of power. He said they knew pyfer as the former and planned for that. So essentially he was saying the old rope a dope was the game plan and then let his veteran experience lead the fight starting in round two forward which is essentially what happened. He lost round two imo but took over after that and never looked back. And pyfer was breathing heavy starting end of round two.

I do think this experience is going to help pyfer going forward. He also needs to get better defensively and learn to mix in his striking a bit more. Some combos wouldn’t hurt.

UFC did just about a perfect job signing, promoting, and booking Joe's fights.

In MMA not every fighter is going to go on giant win streaks or become champion. You give guys the opportunity and it they falter well then so be it. On to the next one.

Everyone sucks after they lose, but it's more satisfying when it's a hype train.

Am I doing this right?
Glad I've never seen him fight until today. Really can't see him improving much, dude is too stiff and robotic

Anyine with a keen eye for the fight game knew Joe Pyfer was just another pretender series hypejob with a right hand and not much else… one dimensional, subpar athleticism, and unable to make adjustments.

Glad Hermansson exposed him… it was embarrassing to put an average guy like Joe Pyfer on a main event.

The hype job done by the ufc and Rogan on him has been tremendous. Some points they made about him:

  • Hardest hitter in the ufc and likely mma
  • Driven and hardest worker ever
  • Finally realizing his talents and ready to break out big time
  • Comes from nothing - nothing to lose and will fight to the death

Bro just got derailed by Jack Harmansson LOL

To be fair, sounds like you are shitting a bit on jack. Dude is a long time ufc vet with tons of experience fighting high ranked guys. He isn’t a champion level fighter but he also isn’t some shlub push over that someone can go in and dust. Clearly still has skills. If the UFC were hyping this kid and wanted to get him a big spotlight fight, I could have a named a few guys lower in the rankings who would have been much better fights for Pyfer to take where he would have had a better chance. I thought before the fight jack was too experienced and it was a little too much too fast for pyfer and that’s what it was. His game needs some more tools to the tool box. Needs better defensive striking too.

Hermansson isn't ranked in the top 10.

Pyfer was 3-0 in the UFC with 3 finishes. Why is that too early to get a ranked opponent?

Mainly because that 3-0 was against specialists.

Hermansson isn't a grappling specialist but seems to get put in that bracket by UFC matchmakers.

Jack has beaten hyped strikers before, and did it again.

The way to beat Jack is by being smart, technical, and well-paced.

Not by throwing hard strikes.
