You're not wrong. Being a ufc fighter used to mean something. They're so bloated these days. Back in the day I knew pretty much everyone on the roster. Too many cards and too many fighters.

I know for a fact that a lot of very rich people pay a lot of money to think-tanks and media personnel and politicians to promote the sort of views you are pushing here. (You say you're an Aussie, take Rupert Murdoch as one example). That doesn't mean that I think you've been paid personally to post this stuff here, but, on the other hand, I'd be very surprised if you have no related personal profit agenda (i.e. you have employees you already underpay and you want to justify it, or you aspire to one day have employees that you want to be able to underpay, something like that).
 
One thing that would obviously make sense would be giving a guaranteed bonus for finishes.
 
I personally think they're paid enough. Dudes can train part time with their homies while working, take 7-10 regional fights over the course of 3-4 years, get into the UFC, and get their chance to strike it rich if they can catch on with the fans. That's a pretty easy way to become a millionaire for people that aren't drowning in other opportunities honestly. Start to finish 6 years to try and see if they can make something of it and leave the drudgery of the 9-5 behind. If not oh well they tried and learned a valuable skill.

I'm not sure what Yahya is making but it's probably pretty decent and I dont recall him taking tons of damage. A guy like that made it IMO. Prob makes good show money and bonuses while earning well from teaching and advertisements and appearances.
 
MMA is a new sport, I'd like to think that relative to the time of it's existence its made a decent amount of millionaires.

It's hard to take fighter pay talk seriously due to the sheer lack of autonomy that UFC fighters (generally) have.

Can these dudes even get fucking sponsors without uncle dana bending them over for a cut?
 
@Southpoor97 are you not going to respond to my previous point that contractor pay can't be compared to employee pay where the company provides them with everything including health insurance? It completely answers your O.P.

They do and it would be a good investment, it's very different than saying they should give the fighters more money out of the goodness of their heart like many say. That is not realistic but paying fighters for all finishes would improve the product and get more viewers. People don't like to watch people point fight and sit on a lead so encouraging fighters to be more aggressive would increase sales.

The problem is weight cutting. Fighters can't fight very often due to the need to "Recover" from the cut alone even when taking no damage. Stricter adherence to the weight ranges and not the weight for one second on the scale a day before the fight.

Fighters fight a lot in the gym and very little in the Octagon. Once a star they fight very little.

This would be an argument if boxing didn't have its first nominal million dollar purse in the 1920s. Its first inflation adjusted purses over a million dollars came before 1900.
 
All of the fighters get paid too much, except for Conor.

That's an interesting point. It's not wrong that, because they do so many events , they can't rely on a small roster, when some fighters fight once a year, sometimes less.
I also think MMA would be more interesting (and less dangerous for the fighters) without extreme weight cutting, but I think the UFC won't do anything about it.

I honestly don't know much about how efficient ONE's weight cutting prevention rules are ; from afar it does look like a decent idea. I'm maybe cynical but I'm under the impression that whatever rules are enforced, everyone is going to try, and eventually find a way to cheat the system.
Those tests would also have to be run by the UFC, I imagine that speculations about shady favoritism would go through the roof...

But I still agree with you, I just doubt anything will actually happen (unless, like it happened for ONE, someone in the UFC actually dies from cutting weight)

NBA players are NOT overpaid. Entertainers of any kind, whether they be actors, musicians, or athletes, are paid based on how much profit they generate. Same as CEOs of large companies. UFC fighters get an embarrassingly low amount of profits. They put their bodies in harm.
 
If they make good money they will only fight once maybe twice a year.
They need to be hungry and earn it.

get a couple of big paydays at the end of their career and then release mid contract then trash them publicly

Based on the value they provide NBA stars are vastly underpaid (despite their insane salaries) but bench players or even role players are insanely overpaid by the same metric. But they have a strong union and the stars support it.

Here is my argument; why do we constantly rehash this topic when there is not a single thing anyone of us can do about it? A change like that takes $, lawyers and to have skin in the game. i.e. be a fighter and have a contract with the ufc. yes we can stop watching the product, that’s about it and for me it’s not happening. Not watching the product will end up hurting fighters in the long run. I also argue that all threads about fighter pay get moved to “The Lightweights” for the above reasons.
 
TS seems to be a fan of business not a fan of MMA, not sure why people are wasting time engaging with him.
