They stuck a poorly cast 2/10 B movie horror flick inside of a 9/10 Sci-fi flick. The result was what it was.
That was more enjoyable than Prometheus
Please do not compare the crew from alien to prometheus calling them dumb as each other.
Prometheus was a crew of experts aware they were going on a mission to find the origins of life as some life form had left cave drawing 'maps' (the most pathetic part of the story in prometheus imo. Oh look I found a drawing in a cave, next scene weyland yutani has assembled a crew and know exactly where to go- pure stupidity)
The crew in alien were blue collar workers who were interested in collecting their bonus and shares and getting home. It just happened a clause in their contract meant they had to investigate a 'distress' signal.
Plus the fact you spend 40 minutes with the crew before any real threat happens you really get to know their characters.
If we spent a year with the prometheus crew you still wouldn't know who they are as they react polar opposites in different scenes.
A ships captain crushed by a ship as she can't work out she should run left instead of straight
A map guy killed because he got lost
A nerdy researcher who decides it acceptable to pet a space snake.
Only decent character was fassbender. He is what till keep this franchise going.
I've practically run out hope for this franchise on hearing the news about alien awakenings.
A sequel to prometheus but a prequel to covenant that isn't even out yet? Why the fuck did he not just make awakenings before covenant.

Don't forget taking off their helmets on a whim just because the air was breathable. No concerns about viruses or airborne diseases.

You captured in one sentence what would have taken me several paragraphs to get to explaining. Prometheus has some great aspects to it, but the repeated forced stupidity of the crew takes away from the film's positive aspects.
Things like these, and many others actually took me out of my suspension of disbelief as I ceased pondering the mysteries of life in the universe and the cosmic dread of an alien civilization that could wipe us out as easily as we could an anthill to shake my head at the '80s slasher victim logic of the crew of idiots.
/i remember the guy trying to pet the face hugger is when I actualy started to get angry. You're on another planet, you see the first ever sign of alien life, and it looks a LOT like a snake.

There is no context where that isn't a dumbass thing to do. Anyway haven't seen it since it first came out on dvd and no desire to rewatch a shit movie.
Its funny how people hate the characters so much. Where does it state they're all supposed to be the most intelligent people from earth... they took a deep space mission to nowhere which is a pretty lonely decision and not one i would take and yet people who hate the movie think they should make better choices and be likable... they're educated, loners who haven't a clue what they're doing and they make poor decisions everywhere. Typical horror movie characters.
Exactly..... they act like teenagers in a Jason movie when they're supposedly scientists.
Who would volunteer for a mission and not even know what exactly you're gong to do? Who would show absolutely no awe or wonder at discovering the first signs of alien life? Get lost in a cave after mapping it, and with access to said map? Who would take off their mask and just start breathing in the air on a foreign planet? Or try to pet an alien snakelike creature? These are all things ANY scientist would not do. They don't have to be the worlds greatest scientists, but they act like stoned teenagers just to move the plot along.
It was an unprecedented mission that cost billions of dollars, the quality of the crew would be as good as it gets. The life of a TRILLIONAIRE depended on success.
Even if that wasn't the case, the mistakes they made were really, really stupid. I'm good with humans acting human and not being perfect, but there are limits.

Bolded the two most important lines here. I can buy that they're not hyper competent. I can live with them making a few stupid mistakes that lead to horrible outcomes.
I can't deal with the outright idiocy that the crew displays throughout the film. How are we supposed to identify with supposed scientists and space travelers who don't even have our average person's degree of common sense, let alone the sort of intelligence that people in their situation should at least approach on their average scale?
No I disagree. I was taken back by their decisions to take the masks off but they're also in the future and maybe have full confidence in their equipment that says the environment is good to go and so they do. The red orb thing maps the cave too, not people... These people left their families behind too, life, camping, sherdog, sunsets and BBQ's.... they all said no to that, they'd rather be in a space ship. That's a poor life decision imo. I can only imagine how many thousands of people rejected a deep space mission to instead spend quality time on a patio and drink a beer. I think the characters are stupid people, educated but stupid.
I can go on but I've defended Prometheus in several threads since it came out. I think the sooner people understand the characters are borderline retarded that it becomes more enjoyable. They were carefully selected by people with an agenda and their intelligence has little to do with the real mission they know nothing of.

Majority of the Prometheus continuity was shelved. Son, I am disappoint.

You can't claim it's a good movie when literally all the characters were plot retarded. Biologists who fucked with unknown species while exposed. Cartographers getting lost. People who can't step right or left.
That was the biggest hack movie I've seen in the franchise since Alien 3. Prometheus blew major donkey cock and I'm hearing that the Covenant isn't much better. It's sad because Alien and Aliens are two of my favorite movies of all time.

Just rereading this old thread its baffling to me how much people got hung up by the foolish actions of the crew.
These people cross me as nerds who are more interested in playing mr critic and sounding intelligent than enjoying a good fucking movie.
It was awesomely made sci fi, the likes of which we rarely get; mind blowing lore, stunning breadth and visuals and exhilirating action.
So, when you think about it, their actions were dumb, who gives a shit.
I swear you fuckers dont know how to enjoy a movie anymore; just constant bitching and how stuff doesnt live up to your expectations.

The problem is that this movie had so much potential to be truly great and therefore it is compared against that standard and falls very short.
Not that it was not a good movie but it was no where near as great as it could have been.
Lazy writing like making the Engineer an impulsive and almost dumb 'Monster' instead of the 'contemplative threat' he should have been was the biggest problem. No highly intelligent being would have acted as impulsively and stupidly as the Engineer did and it was dumb and last to simply turn him into a 'monster' when it could have been done so much better.
