Just rereading this old thread its baffling to me how much people got hung up by the foolish actions of the crew.

These people cross me as nerds who are more interested in playing mr critic and sounding intelligent than enjoying a good fucking movie.

It was awesomely made sci fi, the likes of which we rarely get; mind blowing lore, stunning breadth and visuals and exhilirating action.

So, when you think about it, their actions were dumb, who gives a shit.

I swear you fuckers dont know how to enjoy a movie anymore; just constant bitching and how stuff doesnt live up to your expectations.

I bet Covenant is actually pretty good too.

How hard is it to make a movie with a cast who makes realistic decisions and allow the environment to drive the plot rather than forced bad decisions no rational person would make. It completely ruins the movie when I watch a biologist play with an unknown species of animal. Literally their first move would be to do the opposite of what happened in the movie.

I actually just enjoyed a pretty cool unrealistic thriller the other day, Get Out, by Jordan Peele. Characters made reasonable decisions for the situation presented. It wasn't a realistic plot, but at least the characters were believable.

I think it's treated pretty fairly. The film looks great, is poorly written, and has a good number of moments that obviously should have been re-shot, re-written and/or re-edited.

Seriously, in this genre of movie, it's pretty much a requirement for the majority of the characters to be borderline retarded.

How hard is it to make a movie with a cast who makes realistic decisions and allow the environment to drive the plot rather than forced bad decisions no rational person would make. I remember back then being russled by the scientist petting the deadly vagina snake; but that was only AFTER the film ended.

At the time I was utterly blown away by it attacking/penetrating their masks - truly terrifying.

Point is, I know how to enjoy a film in spite of its trivial flaws.

But its an overrall trend ive observed, people just need to be smarty pants and pick at films for no good reason.

I don't think Veronica Cartwright / Lambert being paralyzed by fear of an approaching eight-foot biomechanical alien rapist is really comparable to petting a space cobra exhibiting a defensive posture.

I thought everyone in Alien, even if they didn't make the right choice, never made an outright stupid choice merely for the purposes of advancing the plot / thinning out their own numbers.

I think with Prometheus, aside from the high hopes created when Ridley Scott himself returned to the franchise, it was a matter of "running in a straight line" type moments simply adding up to a quantity that can't be justified. Had the audience only had to "eat" one or two dumb things, it might have been remembered as great with a dumb moment or two (like, say, The Godfather with James Caan's air punches).

But the nonsense just kept adding up in Prometheus. By the time Charlize Theron ran in a straight line, there had already been the future medical pod that only treats males, petting the space snake, the Engineer acting like Frankenstein on a roid rage, etc...

So his biggest mistake was doing something alone instead of bringing a companion from the diminishing number of survivors? I don't mind if people go off alone as long as they behave realistically when they do it. It's better than going off in pairs and petting space snakes.

It was too much wasted potential. With the visual effects available, and the story, they could have made an Oscar movie out of it. Instead they mixed it with a B - horror movie in conjunction with other bad decisions and got a 6.5-7/10.

I can watch it. Male doctor was embarrassing in his loser personality. "Scientists" were embarrassing. Some members of the crew just disappeared. It did, however, open up the opportunity for a vastly superior sequel, based on the story.. its looking like they failed there.

I like it, but it also annoys me. Not so much for the stupid characters, but some of the weird choices made in filming it.

Why have Guy Pearce play an old man? Why not just use an older actor? It looked awful.

Idris Elba's accent. Sherdog Yanks - is it really bad? It sounds bad to a Brit, anyway.

And it was a waste of Sean Harris. Sean Harris is the man.

I re-watched Alien and Aliens the other day and a thought just occurred to me. Prometheus takes place in 2093, at which time the Xenomorphs do not exist. Covenant is about ten years later (let's say 2103), and the original Alien in 2122.

The derelict ship in the original Alien had possibly thousands of Xeno eggs in its cargo hold. And the Space Jockey's body was decayed, almost fossilized and looked to be extremely old. Yet the events of Prometheus and Covenant would suggest this wreck could not have been more than twenty years old.

Has there been any information released that acknowledges, denies, or retcons any of this? It seems like a plot hole to me but I'm not sure.

Lamberts first idea was to abandon ship. Though the shuttle only housed 1, they attempted to do it with extra air.

Brett saved the cat from being tazered but had to retrieve it to prevent her from signaling the detector. He felt responsible.

It was 1979, man. Horror tropes weren't as cliched as they have become, and even if it is obvious that he will die, I still don't mind as long as he doesn't act like a buffoon and take me out of the film entirely.

I mean seriously, did you think Millburn and Fifield were going to survive when they decided to spend the night in the alien tunnel full of corpses? Or was it just as obvious they were going to die.
