Post Your Drawings!!!

It's mainly dedication, though people with really bad motor skills can get a pass. In that case do pixel art which requires minimal technical drawing skills. Getting good at anything may require you to stop doing other things you like. So it's not unreasonable to not start at something if you don't think it's worth it.

To get good at technical drawing you have to develop your muscles. Drawing a straight line from your elbow is pretty much step 1 and that can take a lot of time to learn. Step 2, draw ellipses and circles. You can now freehand the cylinder, the cube, the sphere, and the cone, the building blocks of all things. Then you can get acquainted with perspective, anatomy, composition, value, lighting, and color theory.

Funny thing is, I was good with technical drawing when I was is in school. The precision was something I was always good at but when it came to drawing anything else, I sucked really bad.

For example, when we had to draw an animal or a man, I barely passed.

Maybe I could have done something to better myself but I was too busy with training.

Animals and people are just made up of shapes placed into correct anatomy and perspective. You then use lighting to apply value. A really awesome technical artist is Scott Robertson, though he does a lot of mechanical stuff and less organic stuff. Feng Zhu is also a good one if you want to see basic shapes turn into cool stuff.

Here's a few of my favourites. They're kind of old now. Haven't uploaded any recent stuff (largely because I haven't been drawing as much as I used to)...

Thanks dude.

I kind of find it funny/interesting how everyone who "can't draw" acts as if it's some form of magic they'll never learn, mostly because they didn't try hard enough in school.

I'm assuming most people in this thread aren't senior citizens... which still leaves PLENTY of time to become good at drawing, if you so wish. After all, it's one of those lifetime things. A marathon, not a sprint.

^^^ truth. You can find cheap classes at craft/hobby shops that people offer lessons that can help you very much.

Awesome drawings btw Inter. Really envious of your pen work.

Thanks dude.

I am quite a creative person but drawing/painting is not one of my interests otherwise I'd definitely give it a shot. I'd probably be horrible at it anyway haha. It's just something that I enjoy by looking at it. Your drawings seem like a real talent to me but then again I don't know shit about these skills so maybe they aren't as hard as they seem to me.

I will check it out. Thanks.

Thanks dude. I prefer drawing in pen.

It's kind of strange, my "pen work" is always much better when I'm not trying, in a way. If I try and exert too much control over the drawing, it becomes shit.

It's always far better if I stay loose and kind of let the drawing reveal itself to me, if that makes any sense at all. All the shading and detail work is almost a sub-conscious thing for me. I'll just let my pen dart around the paper, making seemingly random marks, jumping from one area of the drawing to another, shading and detailing as I go.

And if I set out to do a "really good drawing", it'll almost always turn out below par. But if I'm drawing to distract myself and not really planning it too much, it works out far, far better.

It's probably one of the hardest things about any art form, IMO... you have to work hard at it to improve, but on each individual piece of art, it'll almost always benefit from a level of irreverence and relaxation. In my experience anyway.

I'm the same with music.

I love listening to it, but it may as well be fucking magic as far as I'm concerned.

However, I'm also aware that if I just dedicated some time to it, I could at least become acceptable at it.

That's the thing people don't understand. They confuse skill for talent. Talent is most definitely a requirement if you want to become truly great at something, but pretty much anyone can develop the skill/craft necessary to become good.

But like you with drawing, with me and music it's a case of picking your battles.

Can't be good at everything.

I hear what you are saying. I actually find it very similar in my experience. Im no where near as good as you. But my best pen drawings have just been cartoonish things I started doodling in the middle of a class at school. Anything that ive done in an art class, say replicating a photograph, has been absolutely awful.

Here's a picture I made of Jones vs. Gustafsson in the style of NES Punchout

I think it does also depend on the style of art you're good at.

I'm better at rougher, expressionistic type stuff.

My sister, for example, is the polar opposite. She's an incredible painter, but her style is very, very controlled and very, very realistic. So, almost by definition, she can't just "let loose" and not worry about how it'll turn out, because her style demands incredible and purposeful attention to detail.

Different strokes for different folks... Literally.

This is a drawing I did in 2010, took me about half a day.

This is another that I never quite got round to finishing and probably never will now.

These are great, the Batman one is impressive.
Wish I could draw like that.
