On one hand the Secretary is a high level executive who should leave the warfighting and defence operations to the Joint Chiefs

On the otherhand without ever serving there's a disconnect with the Armed Forces that can never be replicated.

I'd say this case is a bit unique in that his main qualification seems to be having shown loyalty to Trump and a television personality.
