He was a career captain that saw almost no combat and served in civil affairs, and never commanded more than a platoon on his own, which is quite underachieving for a 20 year infantry officer. A captain without achieving company command. He was assigned to the 101st airborne through the NG but didn't go to ranger school, airborne school, or air assault school. It's actually pretty weird he was in the military as long as he was without actually doing much of anything at his rank. Even medical officers at his rank would go through at least one of those schools, and infantry officers usually more than one, but he actually went to none of them. On his overseas deployments he spent most of his time teaching, not fighting.
